Haskins, or Hoskins. Richard and John were early residents. Richard died in 1718, leaving nine children; estate, £1,257.
From «i»Haskin Family«/i» by Joseph A. Haskin: Richard Haskins: Born about 1660 and married Jane Foster (Fluster?) on August 2, 1686 at Taunton by Major Thomas Leonard. The marriage record states that he was "of Portsmouth". Although no previous record of him has been found it is possible that he and John were the sons of William Hoskins of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, who came from Ireland and was admitted freeman on July 9, 1672. Jane was born about 1665 and died childless at Taunton about 1688. About 1690 he married Mary Tisdale at Taunton. They had nine children, John, Mercy, Mary, Daniel, Sarah, Elizabeth, Martha, Rebecca, and Hannah. Mary Tisdale was born about 1667, probably at Taunton; she was the daughter of James Tisdale and Mary Avery, and the granddaughter of John Tisdale, who came to the Plymouth Colony before June, 1636 and was killed by Indians on June 27, 1675 during an attack on Taunton. Richard bought land from the Waldron family in May, 1692, from Mary Street in 1694, and from Joseph Tisdale in 1695. In 1700 he was a member of the Taunton First Military company. In 1705 Benedict Arnold of Newport, Rhode Island sold him land in the area which later became Dighton. Richard was a weaver, educated and literate, as he wrote well and owned a library valued at four pounds. When Dighton was incorporated he was appointed rate maker. In 1714 he was highway surveyor and town clerk . On march 1, 1716/7 he sold his Dighton property to Daniel King of Scituate for nine hundred pounds. On April 9, 1717 he bought from Thomas and Deborah Stodder of Norwich 199 acres at Norwich West Farms, which was the early name of Franklin, Connecticut, about eight miles northwest of the present city of Norwich. The main building, which had been built in 1685, was still in good repair and occupied as late as 1931. He died there on December 26, 1717, leaving an estate of £1331. 16 shillings, 7 pence. His burial place has not been found. Mrs. Haskins died there in 1718.
