About John Hoskins

JOHN HOSKINS / HASKINS 1647 -1716

There's no concrete proof who John Hoskins' father was. The eminent genealogist Donald Jacobus had a section on John's father in "The Granberry Family and Allied Families", published in 1945. He said.....although there is no one good piece of evidence proving who his father was, the circumstantial evidence points to William Hoskins of Plymouth as the father and that there were not really any other good candidates around.

In 1668 John Hoskins was a weaver in Taunton. He married 1st, about 1676 and probably in Taunton, Elizabeth, the widow of Aaron Knapp. She was probably the mother of his children, Sarah and Elizabeth........On August 21, 1689 he pledged six shillings for the Eastern Expedition against the Indians; his gun was impressed for the use of Richard Briggs. In 1690 he was in Captain Gallup's company in the expedition against Quebec. He was constable of Taunton in 1690, 1691, and 1694. On July 25, 1697 he was appointed Taunton Press Master. In 1700 he was a member of the Taunton First Military Company.......His wife, Elizabeth, died about 1715, probably in Dighton, MA.

According to «i»The Haskins Family «/i»by Joseph A. Haskins:
John Haskins: Born about 1655 and married Elizabeth, the widow of Aaron Knapp, about 1676, probably at Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts, where John was working as a weaver in 1688. They had two daughters, Sarah and Elizabeth. On August 21, 1689 he pledged six shillings for the Eastern Expedition against the Indians; his gun was impressed for the used of Richard Briggs. In 1690 he was a soldier in Capt. Samuel Gallop's company in the expedition against Quebec. He was a constable of Taunton in 1690 and 1691. He witnessed the will of Shadrack Wilbore on September 12, 1696 and took inventory of the Wilbore estate on February 23, 1697/8 at Taunton. On July 25, 1697 he was appointed Taunton press master. In 1700 he was a member of the Taunton First Military Company. Because William Hoskins of Plymouth and several of his sons were members of the same some genealogists- believe that John was also a son of this William; I have seen no evidence to support this view. Mrs. Haskins died about 1715, probably at Dighton, Massachusetts, which was established from the South Purchase of Taunton on may 30, 1712. Taunton was established on March e, 1639 from common land called Cohannet. In the Summer of 1716 John Married Amee ______. He died about August, 1716 at Dighton; his will, dated May 31, 1715, named his brother Richard executor
