About Richard Daniel Horrigan

The eldest of six siblings, Richard Sr. died when Richard Jr. was only twelve. Richard became the man of the house. As related by the elder family members, Richard went to work learning the construction trade from a fellow Irishman and elder relative, Barrett in New Orleans. Richard worked to support his mother and five siblings. He first married Theresa Keller, from the Irish Channel having one son, Richard. This marriage ended in divorce. He later met and married a Cajun girl, Eunice Mae "Susie" Landry. Richard loved ballroom dancing but met his match on the dance floor with "Susie" and the marriage was inevitable. This marriage produced three children, Eunice Mae, "Roy Hi", and Jewel. Richard enjoyed life and partied hard during his early years. He always remembered family and friends, finding time to avail himself, firm advice and if needed, his construction services. Richard with reddish hair and glowing smile was an experienced craftsman. After managing large construction crews, Richard, with age approaching decided on smaller construction jobs. From these jobs he would enlist and train not only his son, Roy but several nephews and other relatives in the trade. After school, every summer Richard would have his crew of youngsters and relatives learning deconstruction, renovating, painting and general construction. Richard was a great instructor and never asked someone to accomplish what he couldn't do himself. He was a "hands on" sort of man who wasn't demeaned by picking up a broom or shovel. His memory and stories were appreciated by all. Richard was simply a tough man with a gentle smile. Few men would ever cross this fiery Irishman whose work uniform consisted of a white, long sleeve dress shirt and Khaki pants. Sundays would always find Richard in his suit at Catholic mass. He remained devoted to his mom, siblings and family throughout his life.
