About Mildred Octavia Sedgebeer

One of six siblings and the youngest girl of Mathilda and Richard Horrigan Sr., the fiery auburn haired Irish woman was a warm, friendly and quite gregarious individual who believed in rolling up one's sleeve with hard work to achieve goals. Being of a self sufficient nature probably from her roots growing up in the Irish Channel section of New Orleans, she was a devout Catholic. Having two brothers who became military boxing champions and a third, hard working as a contractor made her tough, protected and the little sister. Mildred was baptised, schooled and married at St. Theresa's on Camp St. in New Orleans Irish Channel Neighborhood. Before settling down as a homemaker, she did construction, truck driving and worked in the military factories in the WWII effort. After her marriage to Oliver Fenner Sedgebeer and children, she worked as an office manager and security consultant for Maison Blanche Department Store. She was a PTA president and active extended family matriarch. Her home would never be empty of children or company as a never ending line of friends and relatives filled her home. Sundays were a must in Mildred's home with the aromas of both her and her husband Fenner's fresh cooking. The gathering place was always the kitchen. Mildred was never known for holding her tongue or thoughts and if one believed they could back her down, they were in for a surprise. She was a good and protective mother and a loving grand and great grandmom. Her advice was always with her index finger denoting her parental authority. The match of Mildred with her fire temper and Fenner with calm, collected manner would seem to be a mismatch but their marriage endured with loving natures.
