About Richard Knolles

Sir Thomas's son Thomas (d. 1446) possessed the manor of North Mimms, Hertfordshire. This passed to his heir, Robert, who died without male issue. It was the second son, Richard, who seems to have been grandfather of Sir Francis's father, Robert Knollys (Herald and Genealogist, vii. 553, viii. 289).

With the death of Robert the main branch of the Knolles family died out, to be continued in a cadet line by his brother Richard, ancestor of Sir Francis Knollys, and the current Viscount Knollys.

Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Knollys-28

Richard Knollys, son of Thomas and Isabell, was probably born some time after 1424 as his older siblings were named in that year in a bond entered into by his father and grandfather. [1]He was aged 21 in 1446.[2]

Richard was named in the 1434 will of his grandfather Thomas Knolles [3] and then in the 1445 will of his father. [4][5] Soon after the death of his father, Richard entered into an agreement with his brother Robert that he would receive 100 marks a year from Robert's North Mymms estate. [6]

Research Notes

Richard's reputed marriage to Margaret D'Oyley - Richardson's Plantaganet Ancestry names a Richard Knolles, Knight married to Margaret D'Oyley, daughter of William but he does not suggest anything about Richard Knolles' parents. Douglas Richardson himself now expresses doubt about the Knolles-D'Oyley marriage and what follows are his words.:

Henry (or Harry) Belknap (died 1488) is alleged in secondary sources to have married Margaret Knolles (or Knollys), daughter of Richard Knolles, Knt., by Margaret, daughter of William d'Oyley, of Hughenden, Buckinghamshire. For example, Wotton, English Baronetage 1 (1741): 62 and Betham, Baronetage of England 1 (1801): 68 both identify Margaret, wife of Henry Belknap, as the "daughter of Sir Richard Knowles, Knt." Dallaway, Hist. of the Western Div. of Sussex 2(2) (1830): 77 similarly identifies Margaret as the "daughter of sir Rd. Knolles." While this may be true, the only evidence I know of Margaret's parentage is a miscellaneous pedigree included in the published Visitations of Essex which reads as follows:

"Henry Belknap. = Margaret d. of Ric...." END OF QUOTE.

Reference: Hawley et al., Vis. of Essex 1552, 1558, 1570, 1612 & 1634 2 (H.S.P. 14) (1879): 563-565 (Misc. Essex Peds.) (Cooke ped.).

As we can see, the last name of Margaret Belknap's father, Richard, is omitted from the pedigree. And, as best as I can determine, there is no reliable pedigree of the Knolles family in print that addresses this issue. [7]

Also unverified at this time is a date of death for Richard and whether he had any children.
