UPDATE (25 May 2010): Y-DNA testing has proven that Richard Lyon, of Fairfield and Henry Lyon, of Newark were closely related. Came to Connecticut from England

Richard Lyon (b. 1624, d. Oct 17, 1678) Richard Lyon was born 1624 in Glen Lyon, Scotland, and died Oct 17, 1678 in Fairfield, CT..He married Margaret.

Notes for Richard Lyon: Richard Lyon, along with his brothers Henry and Thomas, emigrated to the colonies in 1648 from Glen Lyon, Tayside, Scotland. ' The story is that these three who were Scotch soldiers in Cromwell's army, were on guard before the banqueting house at Whitehall, January 31, 1648, and witnessed the execution of King Charles I. Immediately after the regicide they fled to America. Henry Lyon went to Milford, Connecticut; Richard Lyon settled in Fairfield as early as May, 1649' It appears that Richard was one of the gaolers or 'keepers' of Goody Knapp who was accused and hung as a witch in 1653.

In his will Richard Lyon gave 7 pounds sterling to his 'cousin Mary Fitch.' Although she is thought somehow to have been a descendant of Thomas Fitch and Anne Reeve Fitch of Bocking, Essex, England, that link has not been documented; nor has the relationship between her and Richard.

The Lyon Memorial reports that Henry, Thomas and Richard Lyon belonged to one of the five families who descended from John de Lyon, Feudal Baron of Fortevolt, 'but the name of their Scottish ancestor is lost out of tradition '
Richard conveyed to sons Richard and Moses in 1677/1678. The will of Richard Lyon of Fairfield is dated 12 April 1678. It names son Moses, who was to pay "to my Cosen Mary fitch" L7; sons Richard, William, Samuel, Joseph; daughter Hester Perry; son-in-law Nathaniel Perry; wife Margaret Executriz; daughters Betty, Hannah and Abigail, all under 19. Witnesses: Nathan Gold and Mary Murwin. Inventory was taken 17 October 1678. Distribution of commonage was made on 10 March 1723/1724 to heirs of Richard Lyon, who left five sons: Moses (eldest, deceased without heirs; Richard, Samuel, William deceased (children: Nathaniel, deceased, left children; William and Benjamin), Joseph deceased (sons Joseph; and David, deceased, left children), and four daughters: Hannah, Esther deceased (children Joseph Perry; Esther, deceased, wife of Daniel Burr, left children; Mary, deceased, wife of John Downs, left children; and Samuel Grumman), Elizabeth deceased (children Benjamin and Joseph Banks; and Elizabeth, deceased, wife of Samuel Davis, left children), Abigail deceased (left daughter, wife of William Odell.

!"Lyon Memorial" FHL 927.273 L994l Vol.2 Settled in Fairfield, Connecticut as early as May 1649. Freeman, 13 Oct 1664. "The compilers of this family history regard it as very highly probable that Henry, Thomas and Richard lyon were brothers. They do not accept as of historic value the tradition that these brothers came direct from Scotland, although they have no doubt that they were of the same Lyon family of which the Earls of Strathmore are a branch.
