Richard, m. Shuah Colcord who m. 2d 16 Sept. 1687 John Douglas. Trad. states that he was shot by Ind. in the entry of his ho. in 1675, but his fa. was called "Sr.' in 1675 and the yr of his w.'s birth (1662) necessitates advancing the date of his death some yrs. Conclusively R.N. 'Jr.' was absent from meet. in 1685. Stackpole must have guessed, and badly, at the birth yrs. of his ch: Sarah, Johathan. [ref 22]

Richard Nason married Shuah ___. He was killed by Indians, who "visited him in his house and shot him in the entry," as tradition says, in 1675. His widow married, 16 Sept. 1687, John Douglass, and removed to Dover. Richard Nason had three children*: Sarah, Richard, Jonathan. [ref 33:625]

  • Stackpole has so many errors in this family, his data has not been used as a reference
  • death date of 1675 impossible, his children were born after say 1682
  • “Killed by Indians, who “visited him in his house and shot in the entry” needs more sourcing.

Indian Attack:

In October, 1675, [SIC: before September 1687] after the second attack on Tozier's house the Indians went southward to Sturgeon Creek Maine (now Eliot) where says tradition Richard Nason Jr was killed in his own doorway and his son Richard, third of the name, was carried to Canada. This is a very early date fo a Canadian captivity. The boy, only seven years old, may have been kept in the Maine woods and taken later to Canada, or the date of the capture may be wrong. His name is amoung "thos Remaining" in 1695, which implies the later captivity.

Richard was brought to St. Francois-du-Lac, Quebec, sold to a frenchman, whose daughter he married and his name was changed to Jacques Ritchot (when he was 9 yrs. old) when he was baptized in the Catholic Church, as were some other children taken captive at that time. In 1710 "Richard Nasson of New England living in Saint Francois Married to a French woman and having children" is naturalized. The Nason Geneology says he lived to an advanced age and was much esteemed for his virtues.

Note:

Richard Nason was called Jacques Ritchot in his son’s baptismal record.

Jacques Ritchot was the son of Richard Nason and Shuah Colcord. He was born in South Berwick, ME. In 1682, [?? others have 1687] a group of French militiamen and Abenaki Indian warriors raided Sturgeon Creek where the Nason family lived and brought many villagers to Canada as hostages. Jacques was among them. His father was killed, his mother later remarried to John Douglas in ME. He was baptised Jacques Ritchot in 1691 (he was about 8 or 9 years old). His name was a french translation of his father's first name. His mother was called Suzanne Calquet in the baptism record. He grew up in St. Francois-du-Lac, probably in the Crevier family who employed him and married Elisabeth Dubois-dit-Brisebois.

He is the same captive who became Jacques Ritchot, married to Elisabeth Dubois dit Brisebois in 1703 at St-Francois-du-Lac.
