About Richard Newman
The Newman family of Co. Cork trace their origins to Robert Newman who was living at Fifehead Magdalen in North Dorset in the early 16th century. His son, grandson and great-grandson all lived in South Somerset and it was his great great-grandson, Richard Newman, who emigrated to Ireland sometime before 1651. Richard was granted, by patent of James II, the castle and lands of Newbury, which were formerly in the possession of Sir Richard Kyrle. Richard's grandson, Adam Newman, purchased the Dromore estate, near Mallow and left this to his nephew, also named Adam.
RICHARD NEWMAN, was resident in the city of Cork 1651, and in 1662, was J.P. for the co. He purchased from Sir Richard Kyrle the estate of Drumineene, and settled there. In 1686, he passed patent for the castle property of Drumineene and several other lands in co. Cork, and four messuages in the city of Cork ; said lands to be erected into a manor called the manor of Newbury. He m. previous to 1651, Sarah, dau. of Richard French, of Cork (ancestor to FRENCH of Cuskinny), and had issue. Richard Newmans will bears date 12 Nov. 1691, and was proved 27 Jan.
