About Richard Odom, of Chowan County

Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Odom-6

Richard Odom was born about 1646 and died on 12 Aug 1727 Chowan, North Carolina.

Richard Odom, of Chowan County was NOT the son of William Odeon d: 1662 (Capt. William Oden) whose sons moved to Beaufort, North Carolina where their surname was spelled as Odeon or Oden.

In 1665 Richard Odom emigrated to Virginia. [1]

Richard Odom married an Anne of uncertain married surname. [2]

The 1704 tax list in Nansemond County, Virginia included Richard Odom.

By 1713 he had moved his family from Nansemond County, Virginia to Chowan County, North Carolina where he appeared in court records on 07 Apr 1713 and 30 Jul 1725. [3] [4]

He acquired several tracts of land, including 200 acres on the River Pocosin.

In 1725 Richard Odom owned land next to those sold by William Hughes to Joseph Vann in Gates County. [5]

His son Abraham was devised land on Cutawitsky Creek, a tributary of the Meherrin River, [9] and Abraham sold this land to Walter Brown on 14 May 1735. [10] and relocated to land on Beech Creek and Swift Creek of the Tar River. The creeks are located northwest of present-day Tarboro, North Carolina and became part of Edgecombe County.

Various published resources for this area of North Carolina contain numerous records on the sons of this Richard.

Disputed origins

You are absolutely right, the ODEN profile has nothing to do with the ODOMs, but some widely disseminated ODEN pedigrees have wandered incorrectly through the ODOM family. ODOM test results are included in the ODEN project to show that the ODENs and the ODOMs do not match genetically. The inventory for Francis Oden I, d. 1725 showed he had books in English and French. Also, Elias Oden b. 1777, in his inventory had a French atlas. There are other connections between the Duval and Brashears families of Maryland who immigrated from France. I think Francis I was the son of a sister in one of these families. If Oden descendants check their atDNA matches they should find thes surnames. Hezekiah and Alexander Oden of Edgefield, SC and Thomas Oden of Loudoun, VA are the sons of Thomas Oden, mentioned in the will of Elizabeth Cave Oden, [mistakenly Owen] 1748, Maryland. Any pedigree on this family, prior to DNA testing is probably incorrect.
