About Richard Talbott, of Poplar Knowles

Seen as son of Sir Robert Talbot, 2nd Baronet Talbot of Carton & Grace Talbot

Given that this is Maryland, the stated parentage is at least possible, if not all that plausible.

However:

In the Wikipedia article on Sir William Talbot, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sir_William_Talbot,_3rd_Baronet, listed here as a brother of Richard Talbott ( note spelling difference,) it states that Sir William was the ONLY son of Robert Talbot and Grace Calvert. Also, it points out that the family was Irish Catholic, whereas Richard Talbott was said to be a Quaker. Does anyone have any documentation other than the Armistead Family History that verifies the parentage of Richard Talbott, of Poplar Knowles ?

I would take this with several pounds of salt.

According to the Armistead Family History, Richard TALBOTT - who came to Maryland in 1649 - was the son of Sir Robert Talbott, the 2nd Baron of Carlton Co., in Kildare; and Grace Calvert. Grace Calvert was the daughter of Sir George Calvert, 1st Baron Baltimore.

According to the Armistead material, Richard TALBOTT was next in line to become Earl of Shrewsbury, however because of his loyalty to KingCharles, his estates were confiscated by the Cromwell Party, and he came to Maryland by invitation of Governor Stone in 1649.

He settled in Maryland at the same time period as Sir William Talbott and Colonel George Talbott - all relatives of Lord Baltimore. Sir Robert Talbott's nephew became Earl of Shrewsbury.

From here it's probably OK.

In 1649 Richard received a patent from the proprietary government of the province fora tract of land know as Timber Neck. In 1655 he married Elizabeth Ewen. In 1656 he bought Poplar Knowle, a plantation on West River,Anne Arundel County. He died about 1662.

Richard Talbott was born in 1625 in England, died in 1663 in "Poplar Knowle", West River, Anne Arundel, Maryland, (United States) at age 38, and was buried in "Poplar Knowle", West River, Anne Arundel, Maryland, (United States).

Research Notes: Richard Talbott may have emigrated to Maryland from Virginia in 1649, along with many Puritan families, or he may have come to Maryland directly from England.

Not to be confused with Sir Richard Talbot, Duke of Tyrconnell, who died at Limerick on 14 August 1691.

"West River was the abode of Richard Talbott in 1649; he was a Quaker. His wife was Elizabeth, oldest daughter of Major Richard Ewen, who that same year brought his wife, Sophia, five children and three servants at his own charges, for which he demanded and received, in 1650, a patent for 1,000 acres. The issue of Richard and Elizabeth were Richard, Edward, John and Elizabeth, wife of Benjamin Lawrence. 'Poplar Knawle' was left by his will of 1663 to Richard; 'Talbotts Ridge' to his sons, Edward and John, jointly; to Elizabeth his personalty. Richard Galloway was a witness."

  • I've seen the names you found, but I do not know of any reliable source for names of parents of Richard TALBOTT or the mother of Elizabeth EWEN. The Thomas Book by Lawrence Buckley Thomas, 1896, claims that the Wm. RICHARDSON who m. Eliz. [EWEN] TALBOTT was son of Robert RICHARDSON, but MD Calendar of Wills has the will of Robert RICHARDSON of Somerset County, MD, proved 1682, and his son William was not of age in Dec. 1680. The William RICHARDSON who m. Eliz. [EWEN] had children with her:
