About Richard Taliaferro, Esq.
Biography
Richard Taliferro, son of Francis Taliaferro and Elizabeth Catlett, was born about 1705 at St. Mary's Parish, Essex County, Virginia, and died at his estate “Powhatan” on 3 July 1779.
E. Col. Richard Taliaferro. Virginia Gazette, July 3, 1779, "died Richard Taliaferro, Esq., in the 74th year of his age, with the gout in his head." He lived in James City County, Virginia; married Elizabeth Eggleston about 1725. She was the daughter of Benjamin Eggleston.
His Will dated Feb. 3, 1775, was proved Aug. 19, 1779.
Issue:
- 1. Richard Taliaferro; a scholar at William and Mary College in 1754; married Rebecca Cooke, daughter of Richard Cooke of Surry County. Issue:
- a. Richard Taliaferro; died without issue before 1787.
- b. Elizabeth Taliaferro; married Daniel Call, the celebrated lawyer.
- c. Anne Taliaferro; married Carter Nicholas.
- d. Rebecca Taliaferro; married William Browne.
- e. Sarah Taliaferro; married William Wilkinson of James City County.
- f. Lucy Taliaferro.
- g. Benjamin Taliaferro; married a Miss Tazwell.
- h. Robert Taliaferro; b. Nov. 1, 1783; married Miss Wilkinson.
- 2. Elizabeth Taliaferro; married George Wythe George Wythe was Professor of Law and Police of William and Mary College; also one of the signers.

Richard was a planter as well as the colonial architect and builder of Williamsburg, Virginia. Richard built the Wythe House for his daughter, Elizabeth and her husband, George Wythe. He also built the Governor's Palace and the President's House at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg. Richard built the beautiful house "Powhatan" outside Williamsburg, VA. The bricks for this house were imported from England."
