About Francis Taliaferro, of The Mount
Notes
Most genealogies contain an additional son named Zachary who purportedly dies in 1726 in Essex. There seems to be no documentation of this person. Festus Morgan writes to King that he thinks his existence is a confusion with Zachary, son of John the Ranger. Since we know that Francis has seven heirs (the Mason v T Chancery suit in Essex COB 5:434), unless Francis Jr died before 1710, Zachary probably does not exist. Fairfax Harrison [VM 30:333] says T Mount was on the river just below Port Royal. Lanciano follows this to argue that both the river land below Port Royal and the land at Mount Creek were called "The Mount" as Robert the immigrant had to retreat from the forward position under the influence of Indian troubles. It seems clear, however, that Francis sets himself up at the Mount Creek plantation and becomes the farmer of the sons. Francis' birth date is universally set at 1654, but no documentation has been found to fix that date. He may have been born later.
