Died before 27 Aug 1664 before age 63 in St. Michael's, Barbados Islands, West Indies

Last Will & Testament

The will of Richard Thawyer [this one?] of Barbados, dated 6 Oct 1664, proved 12 Oct 1664 mentions his [third] wife Catherine and "children" (Barbados Wills RB6/15 p 35).

Richard died before 10 April 1668, probably in the Island of Barbados, West Indies, where he resided in 1660 (Early Ct. Files Suff[olk]. No. 455)... "he and his second wife and her children proposed to return to England after 1658, but from letters written by him to his sons Zachariah and Richard from Barbados in 1660 (see page 531 of cited source below), there is reason to believe that his death occurred on that island in the West Indies. His son Nathaniel, and Katherine Thayer, a daughter by his second wife, were with him and his wife on the island."[7] (The cited source had not found the will that was found later. See below.)

Also: Suffolk Court records (#424,455,828, paper 29) show that Richard Thayer was in Barbados as early as March 12, 1660 as were his sons Richard and Nathaniel, and he also mentions his daughter Dorothy and his wife Katherine and Samuel (Samuel Davis, his son in law).

NOTE: "There has been much confusion as to the dates of death of the various Richard Thayers. Richard1 the emigrant was dead before 20th 2d month 1668, as shown in a deed (Suffolk Co. Deeds, V, 446) of his son Richard2., who died 27 August 1695."[8]

NOTE: The Richard Thayer who died in 1695, was age 71 per his gravestone. That means he was born in 1624 and therefore was NOT the immigrant who was born in 1600.

He married Jane Kember Parker about 1646. She was the widow of John Parker ,they had settled in Muddy River( now Brookline), Massachusetts and had property both there and Boston, which she and Thayer sold in 1656, and headed back to England. They only got as far as Barbados, where it is believed she died in 1660. He then married Katherine , in maybe England . He died in St, Michael's Parish, Barbados, in 1664. His will was dated 1664 and Proven Oct. 12, 1664, in which he named Katherine as his widow. Katherine out-lived him by a number of years, dying in 1687. Her will was written feb. 1687 and proven Apr 1687.

Richard Thayer was born at Thornbury, England, Gloucestershire. He was baptized in the Parish Church of St. Mary the Virgin April 1601. He married Dorothy Mortimore at the same place April 5, 1624. Had 9 children. Settled in Braintree (Mass) on Elm St. near old highway from Boston to Plymouth. Freeman in N.E. Moved to Boston 1646. Married 2nd Jane, widow of John Parker. GEDCOM Note

Name: Richard Thayer 1

  • Sex: M
  • Birth: ABT 1601 in Thornbury, Gloucestershire, England
  • Death: OCT 1664 in St. Michael's, Barbados
  • Note:

Richard1 Thayer was baptized Apr.5,1601 at St. Mary's Church, Thornbury, Gloucestershire, England, perhaps a son of Richard Thayer, but only the names of his god parents are given on the register, - Richard Dimery, Nicholas Tayer, and Elizabeth Griffing. He married 1st Apr.5,1624 at Thornbury, Dorothy Mortimore, who was buried there Jan.17,1640/1, a daughter of William Mortimore whose second wife Margaret Groome survived him. Immediately after the death of his wife Richard Thayer with his eight small children embarked for America and came to Braintree where Thomas Thayer, undoubtedly his brother was established. Here he bought 4 acres of land on present Elm St. Braintree, about 1/3 mile easterly of Thomas Thayer's homestead, and his son Richard settled here permanently. About July 1646 Richard Thayer Sr. married at Boston, Jane, widow of John Parker of Boston, who came from Marlboro, England. In Oct.1656 Jane "the now wife of Richard Tare, late of Boston, heretofore the widow of John Parker late of Boston, deceased, with Thomas Parker her son, and children John and Noah for their education ... sell to Stephen Greenleaf of Newbury, blacksmith, her house and land at Boston and 42 acres at Muddy River (Brookline)... with the consent of her children for their and her own transportation into England, dated Oct.14,1656 (S.D. 3-148). Mrs. Jane (Kember) Parker Thayer probably died in England before 1660. John Parker m. Jane Kember Sep.29,1628, Marlboro, England. (See American Genealogist, Vol.18, p.114). Richard1 Thayer married 3rd, probably in England, before 1660, Katherine - who survived him and died between Feb.1 and Apr.5,1687 in the town and parish of St. Michael's, Barbados. Richard1 Thayer died at the same place in Barbados in Oct.1664, leaving a will dated Oct.6, proved Oct.12,1664, giving his estate to his wife Katherine for life, then to be divided among his surviving children (not named). The widow Katherine Thayer left a will dated Feb.1, proved Apr.5,1687 only disposes of a negro slave named Dorcio. Both wills are disappointing genealogically, but Suffolk Court records (# 424,455,828, paper 29) show that Richard Thayer was in Barbados as early as Mar.12,1660 as were his sons Richard and Nathaniel, and he also mentions his daughter Dorothy and his wife Katherine and Samuel (Samuel Davis, his son in law). He was a merchant there apparently engaged in shipping rum, cotton, and sugar to New England as mentioned in his account (published in "Ancestors and Descendants of Peter Parker and Sarah Ruggles of Roxbury by J.W. Lingee, pp.529-57). There was also a John Thayer at Barbados who left a will dated Aug.29,1661, proved Jun.22,1665. He mentions various people, but the only relative mentioned is his sister Elinor Lemon. There are several baptisms of John and Elinor Thayer's at Thornbury, England, the home of Richard1 Thayer and Thomas1 Thayer. Richard1 Thayer was made a freeman of Mass. Bay Colony 1641, so was evidently a church member here.
