Richard W. Rychtarik, a former set designer for the Metropolitan Opera and the Columbia Broadcasting System, died Saturday at the age of 87 at the Lenox Hill Hospital after a brief illness.
Mr. Rychtarik, who lived in Manhattan, was born in Czechoslovakia and studied architecture in Prague.
He came to the United States in 1923 and soon began to design sets and costumes for the Cleveland Playhouse. While in Cleveland he also became associated with the Cleveland Orchestra.
He designed the sets for the first American production of Shostakovitch's Lady Macbeth of Mzensk, which the Cleveland Orchestra brought to the Metropolitan Opera in 1935. In the late 1930's he came to work for the New York City Center as scenic adviser and then designed sets for the fledgling City Center Opera. After having provided the sets for some Metropolitan Opera productions, he was engaged by the Met in 1947 as its technical director.
He joined CBS two years later as chief scenic designer for its television shows. He retired from CBS in 1964. Mr. Rychtarik is survived by his wife, Trude, a daughter, Ann Trayna of New York, and a sister, Milada Poldaufova of Prague.
