History

Richard Woodward, Jr., was the oldest son of Richard and Jane Woodward, of England, and of Chester County, Pennsylvania. Richard Woodward, Jr. married four times: (1) Esther Davis; (2) Deborah Stanfield; (3) widow Susanna Cureton; and (4) widow Martha Heald. All were proper Quaker marriages documented in Quaker meeting records. We have attached some Quaker meeting samples of notices of intent to marry at Concord Monthly Meeting for Richard Woodward. They are linked under marriage information below. You may need to print them to read them but it will give an idea of the difficulty of researching in the original records, which might account for a great deal of the erroneous information published on the internet.

Richard Woodward Jr. was born about 1675, son of Richard Woodward & Jane Petty Nyle, A farmer and a Quaker, he married in 1695 to Esther Davis (1675-1700), daughter of John Davis & Hester Coleman.

Richard married 2nd in 1701 to Deborah Stanfield, daughter of Francis & Grace Stanfield. Deborah died 1738/9, and Richard married 3rd in 1739 to widow Susanna Cureton. She died in 1741/42, and Richard married 4th in 1743 to widow Martha Heald. Martha died about 1755.

Note

A word of warning: Some secondary sources have attached Mary Coppock, widow of Peter Britton/Brittain, as a wife of this Richard Woodward. Mary did indeed marry a Richard Woodward of Springfield (this Richard was of West Bradford) with the record at Chester MM (this Richard was a member of Concord and then of Bradford MM.) Richard Woodward of Springfield died intestate in 1748 and his wife Mary was the administratrix of his estate (our Richard was alive and well long after that time.) The given name Richard and the surname Woodward were very common in England and several immigrated to America so be very careful of secondary sources in this family.

The Andrews property in Thornbury Township abutted that of both Richard Woodward and Edward Bennett, who were related by marriage to the Fishers of Concord and Kennett.

In 1701, the Quaker Richard Woodward Jr. (from the Worcester Woodwards) married Deborah Standfield, daughter of Francis (from the Cheshire Standfields), deceased. In 1697, Edward Bennett married Sarah Standfield, sister of Deborah. The Standfield sisters were aunts of Elizabeth Huntley, who married Thomas Fisher in 1713 at Concord Monthly Meeting. The Bennett/Woodward/Andross tracts were at the north line of Thornbury Township, on the beginning stretch of a branch of Chester Creek. The Concord meeting house is about four miles southeast of the location of the Woodward/Bennett/Andross tracts.
