About Robert Adams
With the collapse of the Irish Shoe industry due to mass production of shoes in England, Robert along with his brothers switched from the family tradition of Shoemaking to the printing industry and became Printer Compositors. He was aged 21 living at 77 Lr Clanbrassil St Dublin within the parish of St Nicholas Without according to the 1901 Census. Robert’s wife Anne (nee Davies) was 20 and living at 30 Greenora Terrace, South Dock, Dublin in 1901 before marrying Robert in 1903.
The 1911 Census shows us that Robert got married to 23 year old Annie (nee Davies from 30 Greenora Terrace, South Dock, Dublin) in 1903 and they had 6 children at the time. They had 6 children, Jane, Isabella, Annie, Sarah (who must have died young), Joseph and Elizabeth in 8 years. Robert, Samuel, Mabel and John came along later. They lived in a two roomed home at 4 Bloomfield Cottages in Dublin.
Granddaughter Marion recalls…. “my only memory of grannie Adams was her lovely smile kind face and quite a large lady who seemed to spend a great deal of time in bed.... I think it was probably rheumatics her health wouldn't have been the best having had so many pregnancies.... my memory of grandad also was a nice kind man... tall and loved his wife infact worshipped her.... she was a strong woman..... my mother said she was great and I think learnt much from her.... mam told me this story.... granny Adams wanted to move house and he didn't want to... so one day she packed up everything in her big pram got the kids together and left the house and moved to a new state of residency am not sure if she moved to Rament St. Anyway Grandad arrived home from work that evening to find a note on the set table with a knife and fork and the note reading.. if u want another dinner I'm at. .. so he headed off after them all... something else we always spent St Stephens Day with them .. the sitting room in Rament St had a big Christmas Tree and we had a santa...uncle Joe who never had children of his own dressed up as Santa and knocked at the front door which was very exciting except for David who howled frightened out of his wits...”
