About Robert Augir
From # 46555353 Bio: Father: John Augur, b ca 1748 Conn; Mother: Dinah Page b ca 1751 Robert was apprenticed to learn carpentry, but probably left before his service was completed, and went to Herkimer Co., NY. After getting married,[ to Abigail Hough, 29 Dec. 1805] they lived for a time in Schuyler, and then in Springfield and then Concord. From about 1830 to 1839, they lived in Pittsfield, Lorraine Co., Ohio. Then in Jun 1839 the family moved in an emigrant wagon to Racine Co., Wisconsin, then a wilderness, where Robert bought 280 acres of land. He had a model farm and was a good farmer. He changed the spelling of his surname to Augir, because, as he said, a name should have no other significance, and he was "neither a prophet nor a tool." Most descendants retained that spelling of the name. He was a deacon of the Free Baptist Church, and a member of the School Board of his town. He was active in politics, was first a Whig, and later, of the Free Soil Party. His house was one of the stations of the Under-Ground Rail Road, and he helped many a poor slave away in his flight for freedom. Preachers and abolition lecturers were always welcomed at his home.
