About Maj. Robert Ballantine
Major Robert Ballantine
Worked on a farm after leaving school aged 13 years. Served an apprenticeship in Perth Scotland.
Sailed on Steamship "Athenia" for South Africa where he intended becoming a farmer but as he discovered it did not suit him he carried on business for 4 years contracting and building. While living in Queenstown South Africa his future brother in law taught him milling.
After marrying they settled in Keiskama Hoek, South Africa where he started a successful mill. To provide power for the mill he dammed the Keiskama river. At the same time he started manufacturing wagons and he brought out a number of workmen from Scotland.
During the Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902 he served as a Sergeant in the District Mounted Troops and went on to later involve himself in the Border Light Horse.
On 2 February 1905 he was promotrd to Second Lieutenant upon the resignation of one Lieutenant D Hood. (Cape Archives have records to substantiate this)
The Border Light Horse was amalgamated into the Cape Light Horse and he was appointed Squadron Leader in the Cape Light Horse on 1 January 1909 with the rank of Major
He served with distinction in the 1914 -1818 WW1 in Central Africa (Nyasaland, Zomba)
Upon reaching his age limit in 1924 he was obliged to resign and retired from the armed forces and was awarded the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Officers Decoration
