The following is a letter written in 1937 to William Andrew “Bud” Booker by his Uncle Robert Comby “Batt” Booker. Bud’s father Mark Henry “Mack” Booker and Robert Comby “Batt” Booker were brothers. Bud at the time of this letter lived in Meridian, Mississippi and Robert Comby “Batt” Booker lived near Evergreen, Alabama in Conecuh County, Alabama
W. A. Booker
Meridian, Miss.
Dear Bud
Your letter received today brought tears of joy to my eyes. I was so glad to hear from you. I’m mighty feeble and worn out now. There ins’t any of the old folks living now except Nannie Salter, my sister, and myself. Cousin Archie Booker is still living. All of Uncle John Booker’s children are dead except Archie. Your Aunt Ina is dead. Your Uncle Joe Brown is on the old age pension. J. J. Booker’s two boys, Whit and Eugene are still living.
My wife died April 2, 1912 at Montgomery, Ala. at the hospital on her death bed she sang, “My Times are in Thy hands”, she then slapped her hand over her breast and said, Oh, Batt how happy I am. She was one of the best women in the world.
The same man that killed Tom Booker, if you remember, Gabe Smith, he shot my boy, David. He lay away and shot and killed him in the back. After they shot in the back he fell and they ran up and shot him in the head. Both shots were buck shots. Old Gabe and all of his boys are dead. Some were killed and some of them died with heart trouble.
There will be a reunion at Brewton, Ala. bigins July 8th, ends 18th. I sure would like for you to make me a visit this summer, if you don’t come to the reunion. If you don’t hurry and come I want be here. I can talk and tell you more if you come to see me. The best way would be to come by Selma and then by Pineapple, and then to Tunnel Springs and I’ll meet you there if you haven’t a car to come through the country. If you get off in Evergreen, I’ve got two grandsons there in a Barber shop, Snowdens. I also have a grandson, a brother to the other two, working in the post office. If you come to Brewton and get off, I have a daughter there, Maebell lives there. I have six children living – 4 girls and 2 boys, and 36 grand children’ and numberless great grand children.
I sure want you to come to that reunion. There will be a lot of good preachers there and you will know what your father and Uncle Batt believe. The letter you wrote me, may be that it will bring to you the crown of eternal life, but you will have to work that out. The 27th of July I will be 81 years old. I have an abiding trust in Christ the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ is a true Church. I hope you will come to see me.
Your Uncle Batt
David Lee Booker, son of Robert Comby “Batt” Booker & his wife Hattie Salter, along with his double 1st cousin William Melton Booker were accused of killing their cousin Will Raines. It was reported that David Lee Booker’s father Robert Comby “Batt” Booker paid William Melton Booker a large sum of money to take the blame – when actually it was Dave who did the killing. The fathers of David Lee Booker & William Melton Booker were brothers & their mothers were sisters. Therefore, they were double 1st cousins.
