~MY ANCESTOR~ The son of ROBERT COE, and his first wife, MARY, he was baptized at Boxford, Suffolk, England in September of 1626. He immigrated with his father & perhaps his step-mother to Boston in the FRANCIS in 1634. The family moved frequently... to Watertown, Wethersfield, Stamford, and several villages in Long Island, NY. When his father moved to Long Island, Robert, Jr. who was 17 yr. old stayed behind and was in Stratford in the Colony of Conn. before 1650, where that year he married HANNAH MITCHELL, daughter of MATTHEW & SUSAN (WOOD) MITCELL. He already owned land in the Old Field which may indicate that his father owned this property sometime earlier and gifted it to him. In 1652, he purchased from Widow Ramble a lot and house on Main Street across from Blakeman's lot.
His life was cut off early at the age of 32, leaving a widow and four children. Although he was not prominent in public affairs, he was memorialized in verses by Rev. Abraham Pierson of Branford when he called him a young man esteemed for piety and exemplary character. His widow married Nicholas Elsey of New Haven.
The known children of Robert & Hannah Coe: Hannah Coe b. Dec. 14, 1651 in Stratford, may have died young SUSANNA COE (my ancestor) b. August 16, 1653, m. JOHN ALLING Sarah Coe b. 1656, m. (1) Timothy Gibbard in 1680 & (2) Jeremiah Osborn Lieut John Coe b. 1658, d. 1741 m. Mary Hawley
