Merchant in Glasgow: Burgess and Guild Brother of Glasgow

Robert Dinwiddie of Germiston was one of the benefactors of the Merchant's House of Glasgow. He gave fifty-six pounds Scots to the house in 1681. Merchants House: 571

Robert Dinwiddie of Germiston was a burgess and guild brother of Glasgow. There is no record of his enrolment but it must have taken place in or before 1681, when he was already a member of the Merchants House and donated £56 Scots to the poor of the house. Merchants House 571 Moreover, following his death, he was identified as a merchant, burgess and guild brother of Glasgow in the burgess record of his fourth son Laurence. Glasgow Burgesses: 369

Member of the Committee for the Support of the Poor

On 6 May 1699 he was one of five merchants appointed to consider, in a committee which included five toun councillors and five trades representatives, how best to support Glasgow's poor Ibidem: 146

The lands of Germiston

On 15 May 1691 the burgh council of Glasgow gave Robert Dinwiddie a charter of confirmation for the lands of Germiston (Jermistoune): "whilk payes ten merks Scots yearlie, for whilk he is to pay fourscore punds Scots to the tounes thesaurer for his entrie, and wherewith the thesaurer is to be charged at his compt making". Glasgow Records: 19-20

Death

Robert Dinwiddie of Germiston died before 15 August 1710, the date upon which the town council of Glasgow agreed to issue a precept of clare constat for the lands of Germiston in favour of his son Matthew. He died intestate. Glasgow Records: 452

His Testament Dative

The original testament dative of Robert Dinwiddie of Germiston has not been found. It must have existed though for his widow, Elizabeth Cumming, appears to have been confirmed as his executor dative. Some of his assets had been overlooked at the time of the first confirmation but she brought them to the attention of the Commissary on 11 March 1719, at which time he "new again" ratified, approved and confirmed that she was the executor dative decerned and formerly confirmed to her deceased husband. The asset in question was a bond for fifty-six pounds, sixteen shillings, Scots money, dated 25 March 1699, which had been granted to her husband by Colonel Mungo Livingston, portioner of the Kirkton of Kilbryde. James Paull, tanner in Glasgow, acted himself as cautioner for Elizabeth Cumming. A second asset was discovered after the first eik to the testament dative of Robert Dinwiddie of Germiston had been completed. His widow Elizabeth Cumming brought this to the attention of the Commissary Court on 24 November 1724 and another confirmation was granted. The asset in question was a bond for five pounds fifteen shillings Sterling, plus penalties and annualrents, dated 4 July 1699, which had been granted to her husband by George Cochran of Petershill. 31 August 1710: The magistrats and toun councill have subscribed an precept of clare constat, for infefting of Mathew Dinwiddie, merchant in Glasgow, as nearest and lawfull heir to unquhill Robert Dinwiddie, merchant, there, his father, in all and haill the lands of Jermistoun, paying yearly to the toun ten merks of fewduty, for which the said Mathew Dinwiddie has payd in to John M'Gilchrist, collector of the touns few duties, [ £126.13s.4d. ] Scotts, in full of the bygone fewduty, including the years fewduty jm viic and ten, and the double fewduty as the composition for his entry also included.
