About Robert Harrington, of Watertown

Seen as the son of Robert Harrington and Joan Yonges. Perhaps the same as Robert Harrington but evidence is lacking.

Robert Harrington was born in 1616 at in England and died 11 May 1707 (aged 90) at Watertown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. He was buried at Plot 98 of the Old Burying Place, Watertown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. Tombstone Inscription: HERE LYES BURIED Ye BODY OF ROBERT HARRINGTON AGED 91 YEARS DIED MAY ye 11 1707

From Early generations of the family of Robert Harrington of Watertown, Massachusetts, 1634, and some of his descendants, Frederick Lewis Weis, 1958:

ROBERT HARRINGTON, born probably in England about 1616, died at Watertown, Massachusetts, 17 May 1707, aged 91 years... He married at Watertown, 1 October 1647, Susan George, born about 1632, died at Watertown, 6 July 1694, the daughter of John George of that town.

He took the oath of fidelity, 1652, and was admitted a freeman of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, 27 May 1663, at which time he was undoubtedly a member of the First Church in Watertown, He was a proprietor of Watertown as early as 1642, and owned a homestall, "given him by Deacon Thomas Hastings" a kinsman or a generous patron. He was a member of Captain Hugh Mason's Watertown Train Band, 1652, the captain having been commissioned 5 May 1652; and Mr. Harrington served as Selectman of Watertown, fifteen years, between 1679 and 1700. (Society of Colonial Wars, Index of Ancestors, 1922, p. 221). Evidently he was a man of ability and highly respected by his fellow townsmen to be chosen so often for this important and responsible office. He was a mill owner and miller, and his house and mill were valued at £120, as shown by the original inventory of his estate.

Disputed Origins

http://dgmweb.net/FGS/H/HerringtonRobert-JoanJentilman.html

I have found no proof that Robert Harrington and Robert Harrington are the same man. Simply having a similar name and being born in England in the same year is not sufficient proof to make the connection. And please note that Rev. YOUNGES immigrated to Long Island, NY, while this Robert immigrated to Watertown, MA. Families usually migrate together, and these families did not.

From contributor Anne Field:

My sense, at this point, is that we should: 1) stop making the totally false statement that Robert HARRINGTON came to New England on the "Elizabeth" in 1634 with Thomas HASTINGS; and 2) stop asserting that Robert HARRINGTON of Watertown is even remotely proven to be the Robert HARRINGTON who was baptized 1 Oct 1616 in Southwold, co. Suffolk, England, son of Robert & Jane (JENTILMEN) HARRINGTON. These *may* be the same individual, but it never was proven, and now it's a good deal further from being proven.

From contributor Shelly Ketchum:

According to articles by the Historical Society of Watertown genealogist and "Early Genealogy of the family of Robert Harrington of Watertown, Massachusetts 1634 and some of his descendants", Robert was baptised Oct. 1, 1616 in Southwold, Suffolk, England and his parents were Robert Herrington (1595 England - 1622 Southwold, Suffolk, England) and Joan Jentilman (1598 England - 1638 England), who married March 17, 1613 in Southwold, Suffolk, England. The article in "Early Genealogy of the family of Robert Harrington, etc, etc.) goes on to explain why the parents of Robert were not James (or John) Herrington and Ann (or Elizabeth) Clinton.

From Disputes and Uncertainties of Robert Harrington

There is "no evidence proving that the Robert HERRINGTON of Suffolk is the Robert HARRINGTON of Watertown. You can't "cross the pond" based solely on the name and birth year.[7]

Marriage: 1 Oct 1649, Watertown, Middlesex Co., MA to Susannah George b. 1632, d. 6 Jul 1694, daughter of John George of Watertown.

Either the year on the marriage record has been mis-read or they married after their first child was born; alternatively, Robert may have had a prior wife, and the child is hers, which is actually the most likely explanation.

Biography

Robert Harrington, the grandson of Robert Herrington, for many years the Bailiff of Southwold, county Suffolk, England. His son, also named Robert Herrington, married Joan Jentilman at Southwold on 7 March 1613. She was baptized at Southwold on 5 July 1603 (probably several years old at that time), the daughter of William and Agnes Jentilman [SIC]<of Southwold. Robert, the son, died before 1622 for his widow Joan married the Reverend John Younges at Southwold on 25 July 1622. She died in 1630.

Robert Herrington, seen as the son of Robert and Joan (Jentilman) Herrington, was baptized at Southwold on 1 October 1616. Frederick Weis believes that this was the same person as Robert Harrington of Watertown since Herrington and Harrington were interchangeable at this time. Southwold is about 30 miles from Ipswich in the same county from which Robert Harrington embarked for New England.

Robert took the oath of fidelity in 1652 and was admitted a freeman of Massachusetts Bay Colony on 27 March 1663, at which time he was a member of the First Church in Watertown. He was a member of Captain Hugh Mason's Train Band in 1652 and served as a selectman of Watertown in 1679, 1681, 1682, 1683, 1685, 1691, 1692, 1693, 1694, 1695, 1696, 1697, 1698, 1699, 1nd 1700, a total of 15 years (Society of Colonial Wars, Index of Ancesters, 1922, p.221).

On 24 December 1684, Robert bought from Jeremiah Drummer, goldsmith, of Boston and Hannah his wife for 90 pounds the west or south-west half (250 acres) of the Pldham Farm, where some of his descendants continued to live for nearly 200 years. On 28 September 1685, he gave to his son Joseph 55 acres of land which he bought from Simon Coolidge on 29 January 1679/80.2

Per Charles Bouley, Robert embarked in Ipswich, England, coming to Boston in the ship Elizabeth on 10 April 1634. He located at Watertown, MA where he lived with Deacon Thomas Hastings for the next 8 years. Deacon Hastings who also arrived in 1634 on the Elizabeth was granted 6 acres of land by the General Court. He must have been a relative or generous benefactor of Robert for he gave his homestead to Robert as a gift in 1642.3

Robert married Susannah George on 1 October 1649 in Watertown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.4

Per Louis Roy "It may be taken as reasonably certain that the Harrington family of America started with Robert Harrington of Watertown as the original ancestor"

Robert was one of the largest landowners in Watertown and when he died in 1707 at the age of 91, his estate had grown to about 700 acres, part of it bordering the Charles River where the US Watertown Arsenal and the Perkins Institute for the Blind are now located. His estate was distributed to his sons. As the source of the statement on the origin of Harringtons in America, Roy cites Eugene W. Harrington's Genealogical Record of the Harrington Family in America, Buffalo NY, 1907.5

Robert died on 11 May 1707 in Watertown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. Robert's will was dated 1 January 1704/05, the day before the third marriage of his daughter Susanna. The will mentions his sons John, Daniel, Benjamin, Samuel, Thomas, and Edward. To the later he gave his homestead. His will also mentions his daughters Susanna Beers, Sarah Winship, and Mary Bemis; his grandson Joseph, son of his son Joseph deceased; and his daughter-in-law Joanna Ward, late wife of his deceased son Joseph. The inventory of Robert's estate included 16 lots of land amounting to 647 1/2 acres of land appraised at 717 pounds and a house and mill valued at 120 pounds..6,7 He was buried at Arlington Street Cemetery at Watertown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.8

Notes

From: Genealogical and Personal Memoirs of Worchester Countyvol1

The ship "Elizabeth" which sailed from England, April 10, 1634,had as one of its passengers Robert Harrington, born in England,1616. He settled in Watertown, Massachusetts, where he was givena "homestall" by Deacon Thomas Hastings, probably a relative.Harrington's name appears last on the list of proprietors ofWatertown, made 1642 to 1644, at which time he owned the abovenamed "homestall." October 1, 1648, he married Susan, (orSusanna) George, daughter of John George, of Watertown. She wasat that time an orphan, the widow of Henry Goldstone being herguardian. She died July 6, 1694. He was admitted freeman May 27,1663, and died May 11, 1707, aged ninety-one years. His will, dated January 1, 1704, mentions sons--John, Daniel, Benjamin,Samuel, Thomas and Edward. To Edward he gave the homestead. Hiswill also mentions daughters, Susanna Beers, Mary Bemis, SarahWinship; his grandson, Joseph, son of Joseph, deceased, anddaughter-in-law, Joanna Ward, late wife of his deceased sonJoseph. His inventory mentions sixteen lots of land amounting tosix hundred and forty-seven and one-half acres, appraised atseven hundred and seventeen pounds. The estate included houseand mill, valued at one hundred and twenty pounds. The childrenof Robert and Susan (George) Harrington were: Susanna, bornAugust 18, 1649, married, February 9, 1671, John Cutting; John,August 24, 1651, died August 24, 1741; Robert, August 31, 1653,died young; George, November 24, 1655, was in Captain SamuelWadsworth's company and was killed by Indians at Lancaster,February, 1675; Daniel, November 1, 1657, died April 19, 1728;Joseph, December 28, 1659; Benjamin, January 26, 1661, died1724; Mary, January 12, 1663, married John Bemis; Thomas, April20, 1665, died March 29, 1712; Samuel, December 18, 1666;Edward, March, 1668; Sarah, March 10, 1670, married JosephWinship, Jr., November 24, 1687, and died November 28, 1710;David, June 1, 1673, died March 11, 1675.

Robert Harrington is last on the list of proprietors in Watertown (1642-44). He then owned a homestall given to him by Thomas Hastings. The gift renders it probable that he was a kinsman of Thomas Hastings.' Bond Pg. 272. I found the first printed misinformation about the ship in Bouley. A narrative History of the Harrington Family. Worcester, 1963. In fact, I’ve studied the genealogy of the Hastings family and find no Robert Harrington listed. At this time in Watertown, there was a huge influx of new immigrants and it was ruled by the town that no land or homestall in the original town lots was to be sold to the newcomers. This resulted in a lot of hanky-panky. Original settlers were “giving” land and homestalls to the newcomers. Quiet deals were made. This may be how Robert Harrington came by his “gift” from Hastings.

Robert Harrington’s inventory (in will) mentions 16 lots of land (642.5 acres) appraised at 717 lbs. He had purchased the Oldham Farm for 90 lbs (250 acres.) Some of his descendants still lived there at the time of Bond’s book writing, ca. 1859

His name is last on the list of proprietors of Watertown, MA made 1642-1644. He then owned a homestall, "given him by Thomas Hastings." This gift makes it probable that he was a relative of Deacon Hastings.

He took the Oath of Fidelity in 1652.

Robert was admitted as a freeman on 5/27/1663 [List of Freemen of Massachusetts, Vol. IV. p. 416].

He was selectman for 15 years, from 1679-1700.

On 12/24/1684, he purchased from Jeremiah Dummer, a goldsmith from Boston, and Anna his wife for the sum of £90 the west or southwest half (250 acres) of the Oldham Farm on which descendants of his have continued to live until the present time. On 9/28/1685, he gave to his son Joseph 55 acres of land which he bought of Simon Cooledge 1/29/1679/80.

In his will, he mentions sons John, Daniel, Benjamin, Samuel, Thomas, Edward (his "youngest son" to whom he left his homestead) and daughters Susanna Beers, Mary Bemis, Sarah Winship, Joseph son of my son Joseph deceased and daughter-in-law Joanna Ward, wife of his late son Joseph.

His inventory mentions 16 lots of land amounting to 642½ acres, appraised at £717.

It is possible that all families of the Harrington name in New England descend from Robert [Genealogies of the Families and Descendants of the Early Settlers of Watertown, Massachusetts, Vol. I, p. 272].

Part of the Puritan Great Migration

Arrived in the Massachusetts Colony 4/10/1634 on the ship "ELIZABETH"

Watertown marriages: Robert Herington & Susan George Maryed the first of October 1649 (Harris and Savage says Oct. 1, 1648, see also record below)

Robert Harrington's name is the last on the list of proprietors made out 1642-44. He then owned a homestall, “given him by Thomas Hastings.” This gift renders it probable that he was a kinsman of Dea. Hastings. He was adm. freeman, May 27, 1663. ... Robert Harrington took the oath of fidelity, 1652. He was selectman 15 years, 1679-1700. [14]

Bond reports:

Robert Harrington is last on the list of proprietors in Watertown (1642-44). He then owned a homestall given to him by Thomas Hastings. The gift renders it probable that he was a kinsman of Thomas Hastings."[4] Matthiesen reports:

I’ve studied the genealogy of the Hastings family and find no Robert Harrington listed. This may be how Robert Harrington came by his “gift” from Hastings.[2] However the land was acquired, there is an unanswered question -- how did Robert Harrington, now aged 26, and with no prior documented history of family or work, come by the resources to acquire property?
