About Robert Henry Jenkinson, Lieut-Gov Dover Castle

Nephew of Charles, first Earl of Liverpool.

In 1829 Norbiton Hall estate in Kingston-on-Thames was purchased by Mary, Countess of Liverpool, and her husband's cousin Robert HenryJenkinson, who was Lieutenant of Dover Castle, a well to do man, and was known as the squire. Lord Liverpool (Robert Banks Jenkinson) who died a year before the purchase was Prime Minister for 15 years, and was responsible for the erection of Kingston Bridge, the first stone being laid 1825 and opened 1828, replacing an earlier bridge which was documented crossing the Thames since 1219. He was also Premier during the War of 1812 - a conflict between the British Empire and the United States

===1806-1827 Robert Henry Jenkinson became Lieut-Governor of Dover Castle=== Dover, Kent, England Dover was known as one of the "Cinque Ports" - The Confederation of Cinque Ports was originally formed for military and trade purposes, but is now entirely ceremonial. It lies at the eastern end of the English Channel, where the crossing to the continent is narrowest.

Robert Henry Jenkinson who died at Norbiton Hall on the 6 of March 1857, aged 70, was buried at Bayford, co. Herts, by the side of his wife, (Henrietta Juliana, nee Baker) who had died at Norbiton Hall 19 April 1847, aged 62, and been buried at Bayford, in which church there is a monument to their memory on the south wall of the south transept or chapel.

N.B. Other family members buried at Kingston-on-thames [Source: Miscellanea Genealogica Et Heraldica] 1823 Lieut Col George Jenkinson, C.B. (brother of Robert Henry - - died 1823 aged 40 unmarried, buried Kingston Church (M.I. in south chancel) 1846 Mary, Dowager Countess of Liverpool mentioned above, died aged 69 years, buried Octr 24th in Vault. The 2nd Earl of Liverpool (husband of Mary above) died at Coombe Wood near Kingston, but was buried at Hawkesbury with his first wife, whose monument is in Kingston Church.
