origins

Said to have Son of John Jones (died 1636) & Anna Vassall (d 1640) without supporting evidence bap Lndon 1618

From Jones of Fleet Bay - Harris Ancestors

Robert Jones .... is recorded in the registers of St. Nicholas Acons in a baptismal entry of October 22, 1618: 'Robert Jones the sonne of John Jones p'son of this p'ishe'. His brothers are also recorded, an entry of March 26, 1626 recording: 'Thomas Jons the sone of Mr John Jons Rector and Ano his wife'; other entries being: William Jones (1620), and Richard Jones (1621). The registers of St. Nicholas Acons also contain entries for families associated with the Jones in Virginia, such as the baptism of 'John Hewes the Soonne of Richard Hewes' in 1563; and of 'Thomas Dogget ye soonne of Thom: Dogget', on July 24, 1609.

From Genealogical Gleanings in England, Volume 2. By Henry Fitz-Gilbert Water Page 1316:

John Jones of St. Nicholas Aeon, London, clerk, 18 April 1636, proved 3 May 1637. To my sons Allen Jones, Robert Jones, William Jones, Abraham Jones, Richard Jones, Samuel Jones, Thomas Jones and Joseph Jones twelve pence apiece. All but Allen Jones to have their proportionable parts out of my lands &c, which are to be sold. My wife Anne to have a double part and the rest divided among them (except Allen). Wife Anne to be sole executrix.

Comment: no daughter Elizabeth is listed, but there was an Elizabeth Jones in Northumberland VA married William Ironmonger. No son John listed, and Robert Jones of Fleet's Bay had a brother John.

From http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=rootsnva&...

According to Jesse Macon Lawrence Jr (WorldConnect data base at http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...), Robert Jones was born abt 1632 in Swinbrook, Oxfordshire, England, third son of Rowland Jones and wife, Alice. He gives Rowland's birth date as 1608, death 1 Sep 1665; son of Thomas Jones (b abt 1590) and wife Alice. Rowland was Vicar of Westover, County Bucks. (jml ID: I76307)
Another WorldConnect data base of Jeffry A Allred (ja ID I29532) says Rowland Jones was born 1608 in Little Kimble, Buckinghamshire, and married 22 August 1625 Alice Collier who was born 1607/8 in Wales or England. That source lists only Rowland as a son, born in 1640 as shown in jml.

Comment: not the son of Rev. Rowland Jones, vicar of Wendover & his wife Alice, widow Collier. Their son Robert was willed land at Pamunkey Neck

The claim that Robert Jones married a daughter of William Ball is not strongly supported. Martha and Mary Jones were headrights in 1667 of William Ball. Perhaps related, but not known daughters or stepdaughters, See the D.J. French monograph http://maryballwashington.com/2013monograph2.pdf page 64 who explains Hayden's error.

notes

From https://alliedfamilies.wordpress.com/early-virginia-jones-families/

Robert and John Jones were brothers I suspect that they were both noted in Northampton County for a brief time. In the records of Lancaster County, which was formed in 1651 from Northumberland is a deed from Thomas Ball of the County of Northampton in Virginia, mariner, to John Jones of the same place, planter for 350 acres of land lying in Corotoman River in Rappahannock bought of John Edwards, Chirurgeon, about two years past This deed was witnessed by Anthony Hodgkins and Edward Rendell and recorded In March, 1655 In 1664, after the death of John Jones a deed from Robert Swann of London, mariner, sold to Edward Lunsford of Rappahannock County, planter, 350 acres formerly patented by John Jones and deserted by him.
John Jones married Martha Ironmonger, sister to Elizabeth and William Ironmonger John was dead by November, 1661  He left a son, John, Jr. and evidently a daughter, Susan, who was the wife of Jonathon Hewes (Hues, Hughes. In Virginia Gleanings in England pg. 21-2 is the notation Martha Jones alias Ironmonger, late wife of John Jones, Sr., deceased, late of Virginia Administration 29 November 1681 to Elizabeth Evernden alias Ironmonger, wife of Anthony Evernden, aunt by the mother side of John Jones, Jr., now beyond the seas, son of the deceased.

From Jones of Fleet Bay - Harris Ancestors

Mrs. Martha Jones, the wife of Robert Jones, was mentioned as executrix of Robert Hughes, on April 7, 1677. The Va. Historical Mag. gives an abstract of the Will of Daniel Lluellen, of Chelmsford, Essex, planter, dated February 6, 1663, in which his daughter is named as Martha Jones, and James Jauncey is named an executor (Va. Historical Mag., July, p. 53, 1905).
Mr. Robert Jones died in 1676, his Will being probated on March 1st of that year, naming 'my loving friends Mr. Thomas Haynes and Mr. George Flowers' to be overseers; and witnesses 'Benj. Doggit' and 'Mathew Burrowes'. Mrs. 'Martha Jones exc'rx' was granted administration, her securities being Col. St. Leger Codd and Mr. Jno Harris; her appraisers being 'Mr. John Haynie, Maj. Thos. Brereton, and Mr. Edward Porteus'. Essentially, the colonisation of Virginia was achieved through the recreation of English parishes, complete with the kinship relationships they contained. (John Harris was the son-in-law of John Haynie).

Robert Jones arrived in Virginia by 1658, when he and John Lewis recieved a patent on 2,000 acres in Westmoreland County, Virginia in an area known as the "North Neck" of Virginia. Records indicate that Robert traveled frequently between England and Virginia and was a merchant. Robert obtained some status in his communty by evidence of his appointment as Justice of the Peace in 1668 Robert Jones left a will dated the 14th of Janruary 1675/6, which was probated on the 01st of March 1675/6
Martha, the widow of Robert Jones, is often assumed to be the daughter of Daniel Lluellen of Chelmsford, Essex and Virginia. I have not seen any record that indicates this and in fact naming patterns in the Jones family do not suggest it. Another Jones family in the Southside of Virginia who uses the "Lluellen" naming for their children are probably the true descendants of the Martha Lluellen Jones named in Daniel will of 1663.
The children of Robert Jones of Fleet's Bay were both wealthy and of high rank in Virginia.

Robert Jones of Fleet Bay, Northumberland Co VA was born in England about 1625 and by 1650 was a prominent tobacco agent and merchant in Wiconico Parish who traveled extensively including to England to establish his trade. By 1670 he was the High Sheriff and was known to bet a ton (literally) of tobacco on horse races. He paid Captain Thomas Brereton, whose daughter married Robert's grandson, for construction of a new courthouse. By 1671 he wa Justice of Northumberland County. Robert Jones died in 1676 and his wife Martha died in 1677.
