About Martha Jones

Biography

Martha Iremonger/Ironmonger was born about 1636[1] in Berkshire, England. She married Robert Jones of Great Wicomoco, Northumberland, Virginia before 1657 and died in 1677.[2]

Martha Iremonger, daughter of Samuel Iremonger, Gent., by Bridget Cordray, married before 1657 Robert Jones, Gent. of Great Wicocomoco, Northumberland County, Virginia. They had four sons, William, Samuel, Robert, and Maurice.[2]

Martha, widow of Robert Jones, left a will proved February 20, 1677/8. Her husband predeceased her by about 2 years, leaving a will dated January 14, 1675/6, proved March 1, 1675/6.[2]

"Mr. Robert Jones died in 1676. His will was probated Mch. 1st, and Mrs. Martha Jones exc'rx was granted a commission of administration on the estate of her dec'd husband. Her securities were Col. St. Leger Codd and Mr. Jno. Harris. The appraisers appointed at her request were Col. St. Leger Codd, Mr. John Haynie, Maj. Thos. Brereton and Mr. Edward Porteus."...[3]

"A month later Dec. 20, 1677, the will of Mrs. Martha Jones was proved by Mrs. Elizabeth Haynes or Haines and by a note from Mr. Thos. Haines, of Lancaster Co. Elizabeth Haines was probably the eldest daughter of Robert and Martha Jones."

"In April 1678, the court appointed Wm. Jones administrator of the estate as follows:
'Whereas Mrs. Martha Jones administratrix of Mr. Robert Jones lately dec'd left an estate with many children and by reason of the minority of most of the sd children the Court orders that Mr. Wm. Jones the eldest son take the said estate in his hands and manage same for the benefit of his brothers and sisters and give an account thereof when thereto required.'"[3]

Named in Robert's will dated ____ 14, 1675 and first probated March 1, 1676:[4] Loving wife Martha Jones, executrix Sons: William, Samuel, Robert, Maurice [Maurice specified as youngest and not of age, but later Robert says "my will is that upon the arrival of each child to the full age or day of marriage by the consent of their mother, my sd wife Marha Jones shall pay..."] Daughters: not named, but mentioned as "daughters" (plural) Others: cozen [nephew] Robert Hues [Hewes, Hughes]; Mr. John Cossens, godfather of son Maurice; cozen Jno Jones; friends Mr. Thomas Haynes & Mr. Geo. Flowe [Flowers], overseers; witnesses Benj. Doggitt, Matthew Burrowes. Note

A summary of early Jones residents of Northumberland County, Virginia and a list of daughters is given by #Keach, pp 196 & 198, respectively.

"Martha, the widow of Robert Jones, is often assumed to be the daughter of Daniel Lluellen of Chelmsford, Essex and Virginia. I have not seen any record that indicates this and in fact naming patterns in the Jones family do not suggest it. Another Jones family in the Southside of Virginia who uses the "Lluellen" naming for their children are probably the true descendants of the Martha Lluellen Jones named in Daniel will of 1663."

notes

From "Mr. Robert Jones, of Fleet's Bay, Northumberland County, and Some of His Descendants" by Keach, O. A. The William and Mary Quarterly, Volume 23. Published January 1, 1915.

My first mention of Robert Jones in North'd Co. records is in July, 1660. His business seemed to demand frequent absences from home and his wife Martha transacted his affairs with despatch and ability. In fact, Martha Jones shows in the records as an example of the strong, competent gentlewoman, who bore heroic share in the successful shaping of colonial life. The writer has not sufficient data to attempt a conjecture of her origin, but two records containing the name of Martha Jones are herewith introduced as a matter of interest. In the Va. Historical Mag., July, 1905, p. 53, is given an abstract of the will of Daniel Lluellen, of Chelmsford, Essex planter, dated Feb. 6. 1663, in which his dau. Martha Jones is given 2 servants. His wife Anne, and dau. Mary Deerington, widow, are also mentioned. James Jauncey is named an executor, and this gives some significance to the will as future records will make evident. ...

Mrs. Martha Jones, the wife of Robert Jones, was mentioned as executrix of Robert Hughes, on April 7, 1677. The Va. Historical Mag. gives an abstract of the Will of Daniel Lluellen, of Chelmsford, Essex, planter, dated February 6, 1663, in which his daughter is named as Martha Jones, and James Jauncey is named an executor (Va. The children of Robert Jones of Fleet's Bay were both wealthy and of high rank in Virginia.

  • The primary source for family genealogy is an excellent work compiled by mrs. O.A. Keach and published in the "William & Mary Quarterly" (1915). This work provides a solid basis for tracing the Jones family of Granville county, North Carolina back to Robert of Fleet's Bay https://www.jstor.org/stable/1915269

The claim that Robert Jones married a daughter of William Ball is not strongly supported. Martha and Mary Jones were headrights in 1667 of William Ball. Perhaps related, but not known daughters or stepdaughters, See the D.J. French monograph http://maryballwashington.com/2013monograph2.pdf who explains Hayden's error.

Robert Jones evidently first married Martha Ball, daughter of Colonel William Ball They were married between 1656 and 1662. Mary Jones was likely their daughter. Mr. Robert Jones, of Fleets Bay, Northumberland County researched in William & Mary vol. 23 No. 3 notes on page 192 will be remembered by those familiar with Hayden Genealogies, that Martha and Mary Jones, daughters of Hannah Ball, are mentioned among the head rights of Colonel William Ball, when he granted certificate for land April 17, 1667. In the Northumberland County, Court March 19, 1672, an order was made for Mr. Robert Jones to pay over to Colonel William Ball 1524 pounds of tobacco, and after the death of Robert Jones, Colonel William Ball got judgment against his estate for that amount.

Hannah Ball and her daughters Mary Jones and Martha Jones were headrights of William Ball of Millenbeck claimed in 1667. In 1676 Mr William Ball got judgement against the estate of Robert Jones. Was Hannah (Atherold) Ball a widow?
