About Robert Lovell, of Weymouth

July 1, 2019 Update of Robert Lovell, his wife, and children by Dean Richard Hobart (9th Great Grandson) from information in History of Weymouth Massachusetts Vol 3, by George Walter Chamberlain, published by Weymouth Historical Society .1923 (representing most current data -- please edit with citation if more current info found)

According to the family entry beginning on page 392, Robert Lovell was 40 when he arrived with Elizabeth (his wife, aged 35), Anne (aged 16), Zaccheus (15), John (8), Ellen (1) and James (1) [probably twins]. They came with his servant, Joseph Chickin (16). They sailed from Weymouth in Dorset, England, on or near 20 Mar 1634-35, and arrived at Dorchester, MA 7 Jun 1635 as a member of Rev. Joseph Hull's Company.

He was made a freeman of the Massachusetts Bay Colony 2 Sep 1635. He died sometime between his will dated 3 Apr 1651 and 6 Nov 1658 when his wife Elizabeth was referred to in a deed as 'widow Lovell'. His estate was proved 25 Jun 1672, and his wife Elizabeth is thought to have died shortly before his will was probated.

For researchers, it should be noted that Weymouth was part of Suffolk County until the creation of Norfolk County in 1793.

Also of interest, it is noted in the family entry in The Great Migration (see citation below) that no record was found of servant Chickin in Massachusetts, so his status is unknown. Some sources say he might not have sailed, others think he might have died, and other think he might have eventually changed his name when reaching adulthood if not further employed - as many young people paid for transit as indentured servants.

See entry at: Great Migration 1634-1635, I-L. (Online database. AmericanAncestors.org. New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2008.) Originally published as: The Great Migration, Immigrants to New England, 1634-1635, Volume IV, I-L, by Robert Charles Anderson. Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2005.

IMMIGRANT (1635) - They "had come to Plymouth Colony with a group of about 22 families under the leadership of the Rev. Joseph Hull (see Banks , Charles Edward, 'Planters of the Commonwealth,' Genealogical Pub. Co., Boston, 1961, p. 127; also Boyer, 'Ship Passenger Lists, National and New England,' p. 150). Most of them were from the Somersetshire parishes of Batcombe and Broadway, and they left Weymouth, Dorsetshire in March 1635, arriving at Plymouth Colony 5 May 1635. The name of their ship is not known. The General Court gave them permission to settle on the plantation at Wassaguscus and in July changed the name to Weymouth. The first Lovell is listed as 'Robert, husbandman from Weymouth.' His age is given as 40 and his wife Elizabeth's as 35, birth years thus being about 1595 and 1600. They had with them five children..." (Bonnie Hubbard)
