Robert later joined the Barons in rebellion against King John, at which time the castle of Hanslope was beseiged and demolish by Fauld de Breant and placed into the king's hands, then given, by King John in 1206 to Hugh de Nevill. After this, Henry III conferred Hanslope and all the other land and fees of Robert Mauduit on to Henry de Brailrof for his support in war.

Later, Robert must have made peace with the king since his manor and lorship of Hanslope was restored to him in the same year.

Robert married Isabella, daughter of Lord Thurston Basset, by whom he had two sons, William and Robert. His second son, Robert was given the lordship of Warminster and other lands in Wilshire and Somersetshire. Robert the father, died in or before 1222.

Robert Malduit sat as a justicier in the Curia Regis in 10 John (1209/09), when fines were acknowledged there. He was the son of William Malduit. He was the sheriff of Wiltshire during the last nine or tens years of the reign of Henry II, and on his father's death, he succeeded to the office of chamberlain of the Exchequer, which he exercised during the whole of the reign of King John. [Rot. de Liberate, passim.] In 1 John, for a fine of 100l., he obtained the custody of Rockingham Castle [Rot. de Oblatis, 9], and from 2 to 7 John, he was sheriff of Rutland.

Robert served the king in his Irish expedition of 1210 [Rot. de Prastito, 185], but soon after joined with the discontented barons who contested for their liberties. The Close Roll of 17 John records his name among those who took up arms against the king. His son, also named William, was an ever more active participant, and the family estates were seized by the King. Soon after the accession of King Henry III, both father and son returned their allegiance to crown, and their land was restored to them. [Rot. Clau. i. 237-346]

Robert Malduit died about Jun 1222, or 6 Henry III. His widow was Isabella, daughter of Thurstan Basset. His son, William married Alice, the daughter of Waleran, Earl of Warwick, whose son, also named William, succeeded to that earldom, which continued in the family until 1589.
