Robert Maxwell, 5th / 6th Lord Maxwell was born circa 1510.1 He was the son of Robert Maxwell, 4th / 5th Lord Maxwell and Janet Douglas.

He married Lady Beatrix Douglas, daughter of James Douglas, 3rd Earl of Morton and Catherine Stewart, after 25 July 1530.1 He died on 14 September 1552.2

He held the office of Warden of the Western Marches in 1542.2 He succeeded as the 5th Lord Maxwell [S., 1445] on 9 July 1546.2 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Scotland] in 1551.2
