About Robert of London

ROBERT OF LONDON (afterwards ROBERT OF LUNDIN)

The Question of Identity

Robert of London, here treated, is not the same person as Robert of London who is the son of Richard of London and Matilde of Ferrers Dryburgh: 54

Robert of London, here treated, is the bastard son of William I, King of Scots. NRS: GD1/17/1 His mother's name is not known, although it seems quite likely, probable even, that she belonged to the family of de Londres or de Londoniis. [The Anglo-Norman Era in Scottish History. By G. W. S. Barrow. (Oxford University Press, 1980). pp. 63-4]

Robert of London, here treated, is noticed as the king's son in the witness list of at least one of the charters issued by William I, King of Scots: "Robto de London fil mo", Kelso Liber: charter number 144 on p. 112 and as the king's brother in a charter by which Alexander II, King of Scots, confirms his gift of land at Cadzow in Lanarkshire to the monks of Kelso: "hac carta mea conf'masse . donacomem illa qua Robert' de London frat' meus secit deo 7 ecclie sce Marie de Kelch 7 monachis ibide deo suientibz". Kelso: 183

Marriage

According to the Scottish Clan and Family Encyclopedia, Robert of London, here treated, married the heiress of the house of Lundin and, thereafter, assumed the Lundin surname. [Scottish Clan and Family Encyclopedia. By George Way of Plean and Romilly Squire (Harper Collins, Glasgow, 1994), p. 416]
