About Rosamund “Rose” Hatton, Convict "Mary Ann" 1791

Rosamond "Rose" SPARROW was born c1763 (age 65 in 1828).

Rose and her mother Ann SPARROW, were convicted of theft. She was charged with stealing out of the shop of Mr John Sadler, Linendraper in Beadale, sundry articles of linendrapery goods. She wasone of 106 convicts transported on the ship 'Mary Ann', January 1791. . Rose arrived in Sydney Cove on 9/7/1791 .

Rose married Joseph HATTON on 18/3/1792 at Parramatta

In 1795, after Rose apparently stabbed Joseph in the belly (in a fit of jealousy and passion) they separated. Here's the text from an account of the early days of the colony:

"There was at this time under the care of the surgeon Joseph Hatton, a settler at the Eastern Farms, an elderly man, who had been dangerously stabbed in the belly by his wife, a young woman (named before their marriage Rosamond Sparrow), in a fit of jealousy and passion. On his recovery, he earnestly requested that no punishment might be inflicted on her, but that she might be put away from him."

In 1799 she was sent to Norfolk Island but had returned by 1806.

In 1806 she was housekeeper to J Oliver.

Rose and Joseph Hatton never got divorced. Joseph lived with Ann Smith (Colpitts) from the late 1790's until his death in 1828. They never married. Rose tried to claim Joseph's estate on his death but ended up getting only a small amount of cash. After Ann's death in 1832, the estate was shared between Joseph Hatton 11 (born 1800) and Elizabeth Smith (his half sister).
