About Roy M Munks

Roy Munks (1943 - 2008)

Brief overview:

Roy (65), was murdered, however it was originally reported that he had died as a result of being attacked by a buffalo on his game farm in Hoedspruit, Limpopo of 1st July 2018. Police then believed Munks was murdered in a robbery. "The attackers probably stabbed him with knives, and probably wanted to kill him and then plunder the farmhouse, but they fled when he started screaming loudly," said Supt. Daniël Ramakgoakgoa, the commander of the police in Hoedspruit. A farm worker apparently told Munks' son that he had heard Munks cry out on the night of his father's death: "Help, they shot me!" This information was provided to the police on the night of Munks's death. Two suspects who were arrested for housebreaking in Hoedspruit were questioned and admitted they were involved in Munks's death. The men were charged with murder and detained. Supt. Ramakgoakgoa did not want to announce the names of the suspects as the case was at a sensitive stage.

After intensive investigations spanning several months, management of the South African Police Service took a decision to charge four station commanders with defeating the ends of justice. The investigations started after Tzaneen police station was found to have cooked their own crime figures while deliberately covering up serious cases in 2008. Assistant commissioner of the station Khazamula Ngoveni was accused of manipulating statistics in order to convince the SAPS management that his station had brought down crime in the area. Ngoveni, who has since moved to another station, was never charged criminally. Brigadier Naledzani Julia Sivhula (48), Captain Matome Jonathan Matsapola (51), Brigadier Nelson Mulaudzi (50) and Lieutenant-Colonel Mahlodi William Ramokgobedi (49) appeared in the Polokwane Magistrate's Court in December 2011, charged with defeating the ends of justice, and would appear in court again on January 20. The investigation found that murder cases had been reduced to inquests and housebreakings were played down by being described as cases of trespassing.
