About Rt Hon Charles Booth, PC, FRS
In 1862, he founded, with his brother Alfred, the shipping company which became the Booth Steamship Company, specializing in the shipping of goods, especially skins and leather, between Latin America, New York and Britain.
In 1887, he began a survey of Tower Hamlets, London, which evolved into his massive account of working class life in London.
In 1899, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society.
In 1902, he published Life and Labour of the People (in its final form, 17 volumes).
