Sir Gilbert Elliot, 3rd Baronet, (of Minto) (September 1722 – 11 February 1777) was born at Minto, Roxburghshire, and was a Scottish statesman, philosopher and poet.

"ELLIOT, Gilbert (1722-77), of Minto, Roxburgh - b. Sept. 1722, 1st s. of Sir Gilbert Elliot, 2nd Bt., of Minto, Lord Minto, S.C.J.; bro. of Adm. John Elliot, M.P. educ. Dalkeith 1732; Edin. Univ. 1735; Leyden; adv. 1743; Grand Tour (Holland, Germany) 1744-5. m. 15 Dec. 1746, Agnes, da. and h. of Hugh Dalrymple Murray Kynynmound of Melgund, Forfar, and Lochgelly and Kynynmound, Fife, 5s. 2da. suc. fa. as 3rd Bt. 16 Apr. 1766...

...Gilbert Elliot, a lawyer like his father and grandfather, came to the fore as one of the procurators for his uncle Archibald Stewart, who was tried and acquitted in 1747 for neglect of duty, when lord provost of Edinburgh, during the Forty-five. His father’s patron, the Duke of Argyll, found him a seat in Selkirkshire at a by-election in December 1753. He died 11 Jan. 1777."
