Rudolf "Koffie" van Heerden (1934 - 2013)
Brief overview:
Koffie (79), and his wife Elna (79) were found dead, stashed inside a large freezer, in their home in Belfast on 9th January 2013. Their hands and feet were tied up with cable-ties and they had been bludgeoned to death. "Their bodies were found by the police on the Wednesday," spokesperson Colonel Leonard Hlathi said. Two firearms were stolen from the house.
Their Toyota Prado was found abandoned on the N4 near Middelburg. In July 2015, Bongani Joseph Ncongwane, Irvin Brown Nkosi, and Sibusiso Charles Sibanyoni, appeared in court for their murder. Forensics uncovered that although Elna was strangled, she was still alive when she was put into the freezer. Koffie had been strangled with his wife's bra, and stabbed.
Ncongwane testified that because of Mr Van Heerden’s size, he struggled to fit into the freezer, and Nkosi proceeded to kick his head into the fridge before locking the couple inside. The defence argued their case as to why they shouldn't be sentenced to life.
The State Prosecutor, Erik van der Merwe, argued, “Instead of the prescribed 15 years for house-breaking with intent, the court must sentence them to at least 20-years.” He asked for life sentences on the two counts of murder, for all three.
