About Rueben Broaddus
Rueben Broaddus was the pioneer son of Lunsford and Nancy (Gayle) Broaddus. Both of his parents were from Fredericksbury, VA. His father Lunsford was a Capt in the war of 1812.
In 1832 his parents moved from VA to Connersville, IN because they opposed slavery. In the fall of 1835 Reuben and his parents made a 16 day wagon trip to Marshall County. They settled just east of Lacon, in what would be Hopewell twp. Lunsford is credited with naming Hopewell twp.
Rueben was one of eleven children. His siblings were: Christopher, Elizabeth, Helen, Leland, Caroline, Susan, Andrew, Irving, Eleanor and Lucy.
On 25 Nov 1855 in Marshall County Rueben married Mary Jane Forbes the daughter of William & Hannah (Buckingham) Forbes.
Rueben & Mary settled on Sandy Creek in Roberts township of Marshall County. In 1868 they moved to farm west of Varna. Rueben was a successful farmer (over 54 years) and an excellent auctioneer.
The couple had seven children:
Leland, infant, Lawrence, Minnie, Warren, Mary and Andrew.
Rueben also had a keen interest in education and served for 39 continuous years as a school director.
