Identifying the Mother of Ruth Howard, who was Baptized in Anne Arundel Co., MD, on 20 Sep. 1708/9, and who married Mareen Duvall, Jr. on 1 Oct. 1724.

Ruth Howard was the daughter of Joseph Howard ( 1676 – 1736) of Anne Arundel Co., MD, and one of his three wives.

Joseph Howard married first, about 1700, Hannah Dorsey, daughter of Col. Edward Dorsey (d. 1705) and his wife Sarah Wyatt.Hannah died before 26 Oct. 1704 leaving three children who were mentioned, but not by name, in the will of their Grandfather, Col.Edward Dorsey.

Joseph Howard married secondly on 12 Oct. 1706, Ann, widow of Joseph Burras or Burroughs.Ann was buried 24 Oct. 1707.These records are recorded in All Hallows Parish.There was one child born to this marriage and it likely that it was a son, Henry Howard.

Joseph married thirdly on, 28 Sep. 1708, in St. Anne’s Parish, Margery Keith.They appear to have had five children.

Attached is a copy of three accounts of the family of Joseph Howard.They all appear in published genealogies.In the first, “Anne Arundel Gentry,” by Harry Wright Newman, 1933, Ruth Howard is listed as the daughter of Joseph Howard and his wife Hannah Dorsey.In the second, “Mareen Duvall of Middle Plantation,” by Harry Wright Newman, 1952, Ruth is listed as the daughter of Joseph Howard and his wife Margery. No explanation is given as to why Mr. Newman has changed his mind.In the third account, “The Dorsey Family,” by Dorsey, Dorsey and Nimmo, 1947, Ruth is said to be the daughter of Joseph Howard and Margery Keith.

Discussion:

Ruth Howard’s baptism. Ruth was baptized on “20 Mar. 1708” according to the records of St. Anne’s Parish.LDS Film # 0013281, page 376 is as follows.I list three consecutive entries. “Mar. 20th 1708Was Baptized Ruth Daughter of Joseph Howard & Margery his wife Mar. 21, 1708Was Baptized Stephen son of Thomas Bordley & Rachel his wife. Mar. 27th, 1709Was Baptized John son of Anthony Arnold & Sarah his wife”

It is clear from the above entries that the year at that time changed on 25 Mar. and that Ruth was baptized on 20 Mar. 1708/09 – or what we now call 20 Mar. 1709. [%E2%80%9CAnne Arundel Gentry” on page 272 has Ruth Howard being baptized on 28 Mar. 1708, but the LDS Microfilm definitely shows “20 Mar. 1708.”If the 28 Mar. 1708 date were correct, then Ruth would have been baptized six months before the marriage of Joseph and Margery.]

The records of St. Anne’s parish, p. 378, show the marriage record for Joseph Howard to Margery Keith on 28 Sep. 1708.If Ruth was baptized on 20 Mar. 1709, that would have been about five and a half months after the marriage, assuming that she had been born shortly before the baptism.Then, there is the question of the terminology of “daughter of Joseph Howard & Margery his wife.”I don’t know that this tells us that Margery was actually Ruth’s mother.She would have been at the baptism as Joseph Howard’s wife and it is easy enough to see how she might be listed as the mother.If Margery were a step-mother, would it have been worded any differently?

I think this is a good list of Joseph Howard’s children.Col. Edward Dorsey wrote his will on 26 Oct. 1704 and in it he left 20 shillings each to “my daughter Hannah Howards three children.”These three children have been accounted for differently by various researchers.Joseph Howard (Jr.) was buried from All Hallow’s 1 Feb. 1717.The second Joseph Howard (Jr.) must therefore have been born after that date and was under age 21 on 6 Jun. 1737 when his father Joseph made his will.The second Joseph must therefore be a child of Margery Keith’s.

Hannah Howard married Richard Jacob on 1 Jan. 1718/19 according to the records of St. Anne’s Parish, p. 407.If she married at age 16 she would have been born about 1703.If she was older she would have been born before 1703.So it seems apparent that Hannah was a daughter of Hannah Dorsey’s.

If Ruth Howard had been born shortly before her baptism, then she would have been about 15 and a half at the time of her marriage to Mareen Duvall.I think it likely that she was Hannah Dorsey’s child.It is important to consider that Ruth Howard may not have been a baby when she was baptized.Hannah Dorsey’s mother was a Wyatt and the Nicholas Wyatt familywas Quaker.Quakers did not believe in baptism.It may be that Joseph Howard waited until after his wife’s death before he had his daughter baptized.It is also interesting that there are no baptism records for Hannah, the first Joseph Jr., Henry, or most of the other children, although this may be due to a lack of records.Ruth’s husband, Mareen Duvall was born 14 Oct. 1702.

I don’t know what proof there is that Henry Howard was the son of Ann() Burras or Burroughs.On 7 July 1739 Margery Howard, “widow” dispersed her property to her children naming sons Cornelius, Ephraim, Joseph and daughter Sarah.[Anne Arundel County Deed Book/Liber RD 3, p. 165.]The property being distributed was apparently personal property and she disbursed it to her own children.Margery Howard [probably named for her mother] was not listed, but was probably dead by 6 Jun. 1736 when Joseph Howard in his will gave grandson Joseph “Hichings” 100 acres, but did not mention Joseph’s mother.Margery lists her sons in apparent order and then mentions her daughter.There is no mention of Joseph Howard’s four children by previous marriages.

“The Dorsey Family,” pages 33 and 54 gives a birth date for Henry Howard of 14 Jan. 1703.They then identify him as a son of Hannah Dorsey.“Maryland Births and Christenings Index, 1662-1911” shows a Henry Howard born on this date, and baptized 4 Jun 1704, but they give his father as “Wm. Howard” and mother as “Jane Howard.”The baptismal record is from either Westminster Parish or All Hallows Parish and both are listed on LDS Film # 13279.

Page 54 of the Dorsey history says that Henry Howard, born 14 Jan. 1703, married Sarah Dorsey, born 15 Oct. 1715.This is not impossible, but a birth year of 1707 sounds more reasonable and there is still quite a difference in age.

Conclusion:

Based upon identifying the three oldest children, I think the preponderance of the evidence suggests that Ruth Howard is the dau. of Hannah Dorsey.I think that the 7 Jul. 1739 deed of Margery Howard, widow, of personal property to her sons Cornelius, Ephraim, Joseph and her dau. Sarah, identify which children are hers, and the omission of a deceased daughter (Margery) is understandable.

There is certainly room for interpretation.If a good record could be found of Henry Howard’s birth 14 Jan. 1703 it could change things, but I have to think that people have acquired the 14 Jan. 1703 record in error.

“Ann Arundel Gentry” page 273 lists Ruth Howard as a dau. of Hannah Dorsey and gives her bapt. Date of “28” Mar. 1708, despite the fact that in the paragraph just above the author notes that Hannah Dorsey died in 1704.So the author must have either thought that Ruth Howard was not baptized near the time of her birth, or he simply made an error.

I gladly welcome any comments, corrections or improvements.This is a problem that has confused many researchers and there must be information out there that I haven’t seen.

Joseph Howard, the eldest son of Cornelius and Elizabeth Howard, was born at the parental dwelling on South River about the year 1676.On the death of his mother he became seized of the home plantation which was the hereditary seat of his descendants until the twentieth century.He ultimately instituted a survey of the parental tract and with other tracts it was resurveyed into the name of “Howard’s Inheritance”.The mansion house still standing, known as Mulberry Hill, is a fine specimen of early American architecture and boasts of the reputation of being the oldest brick house in Anne Arundel County.Some believe that Mulberry Hill was built by Captain Cornelius Howard before his death in 1680, but others believe it was constructed by his son, Joseph.

At ‘Howard’s Inheritance’ Joseph Howard brought all three wives, and there he raised his children who established ultimately the most

Page 273 numerous descendants of Matthew Howard.He married first Hannah, the daughter of Colonel Edward Dorsey by his first wife, Sarah Wyatt.Hannah was made an heir in the will of her father in 1704, when Colonel Dorsey mentioned his daughter, Hannah Howard, and her three children.Hannah, however, died before the probation of his will in 1705.The administration accounts of Colonel Dorsey show distributions to Joseph Howard in right of his deceased wife and his three minor children.

Joseph Howard remained a widower for about a year, and then on October 2,, 1706, he married Anne, the widow of Joseph Burrass, a late planter of South River.Anne died within a year and left an infant son, Henry.She was buried from All Hallow’s Church on September 24, 1707.

Other than serving on the vestry of St. Ann’s Parish in 1712, Joseph Howard did not take the interest in public as his distinguished father but remained a gentleman planter.He became a pioneer owner of lands in the western section of Anne Arundel County which ultimately became incorporated into Queen Caroline Parish.Before his death he had negotiated warrants for some 4,000 acres on both sides of ‘Doughoregan Manor’ where he placed his three sons – Henry, Cornelius, and Ephraim.One of his grants ‘Discovery’ of 2,500 acres, which lay on the south side of the branch of the Patuxent River called Middle River, he became identified solely with his descendants for a number of years thereafter.

Page 274 Joseph Howard died in 1736, the year in which his will was probated in Anne Arundel County.His third wife had preceded him to the grave.Joseph his namesake inherited the ancestral dwelling and plantation known as ‘Howard’s Inheritance’, and also 200 acres of ‘Discovery.’

Henry Received ‘Kilkenny’, ‘Howard’s Hazard’, and a portion of ‘Second Discovery’.Cornelius was devised the remainder of ‘Discovery’ and 400 acres of ‘Howard’s Passage’.Joseph Higgins, the son of his deceased daughter, was left 100 acres of the ‘Second Discovery’.

Colonel Henry Ridgely, Joshua Dorsey, and John Dorsey of Edward, were named as friends and overseers to protect the interests of his sons.Joseph Jr., a minor, was placed under the guardianship of Dr. Richard Hill with the request that he be instructed in the knowledge of ‘phisick’.The daughters received 20 shillings each.”

Hannah and Joseph Howard lived on Howard’s Inheritance adjoining Hockley in the Hole, which he had inherited from his father, Cornelius Howard.(Wills 2, f. 207)Hannah died before October 1704, leaving three children, who were bequeathed 20 shillings each, in the will of her father, Col. Edward Dorsey.In 1703/4 Joseph Howard received Hannah’s share of her brotherEdward Dorsey’s estate.(Test.
