STANISLOVAS MAROZAS - Pop’s grandfather
He was born about 1818 in Spirakiai, Lithuania. He was alive in 1905 . It is unclear what the following is : “ He lived in Lesvincho (area of Kazornes Lasvenche )” The acreage was owned by the Russian Count Tiskovich . His land bordered the Count’s estate. He said there were 2-3 families there, but that would describe Vilkiskis which was 3 miles away and where the Count gave his son Marcijonas 128.5 acres. He died in Paneveyzs. He was Pop’s grandfather. This is Pop’s description of him:
He was a strong family man..a leader among his neighbors...a very devout Catholic who always attended Mass and prayed for everyone. While the men went to the bar to say farewell to Pops, his grandfather told him “Child, I’m goig to church to pray for a safe journey for you. “ Pops waited until he returned before he started his journey to the U.S. He had encouraged Pops to join his cousin Stefan Marozas in Binghamton, N.Y. Stefan and his wife were visiting Lithuania when Pops left for the US.
He gave his daughter Barbora’s husband $300 for her dowry..a large amount then.
He was kind and generous to those close to him. He took great interest in Pops and gave him some money which Pops kept for a long time. Pops held him in high esteem.
He was a well established successful farmer but was thrifty.
He was odd in some ways. He would wrap a woman’s shawl around his head , cross it over his chest and tie it in back for warmth in old age .
He was like a forest ranger protecting the land from poachers. on this dvaras manor. He had land rent free from the Count. (unusual as most serfs rented land and working for a Count, only could farm their land on the weekends as so most serfs could not get ahead. The revolt of the serfs ended the Feudal system.
He refused an offer of land on the estate for 33 rubles. “I have land, a gun and liquor at Christmas. “ (he was given 4 gallons of whiskey at Christmas time. )
When the Feudal system was abandoned, he lost the land he had when it was surveyed and the forests were cut down.
His son Marcijonas Marozas was a serf who became the overseer of the Count’s estate and was given 128.5 acres by the Count because of hard work.
He built his own home and farm buildings . When he sold it in 1910, 3 of his children got the
profits and those children immigrated to Binghamton , N. Y.
My family knew them there.
