About Sam Simcha Daiter
Sam was the oldest child of Moshe and Sarah Daiter. He was born around Proskorov in the Russian Empire. He left Russia with his father and younger brother Saul to likely escape a draft into the Russian Army which would have meant 25 years of service in the most difficult of circumstances which would have been a likely death sentence. He spent at least a year in Winnipeg working alongside his Dad and brother to raise funds to sponsor his mother and younger siblings to Canada and to save for purchase of a house and land in the Jewish immigrant settlement of Bird's Hill, Manitoba. He married Sarah Matthews at the Beth Sha'ul synagogue in Bird's Hill, RM of Springfield Manitoba then spent his adult years initially as a farmer then as a businessman in Kenora, Ontario. He was involved with maintaining the Kenora synagogue and as an active member of the Kenora Jewish community until his retirement in 1957 when he moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba and resided at 38 McAdam Ave. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Rosh Pina Synagogue, and B'nai B'rith Lodge. Devoted husband, father of four, Zaida to thirteen grandchildren, and brother to his siblings and their families.
