Samuel was born in 1732 (or 1731?). He was the son of Jacob Ames and Ruth Shattuck.

Private Samuel Ames served with 7th Regiment, Worcester County Militia, Massachusetts Militia during the American Revolution.

Samuel Ames of Rutland was a Private in Capt. David Bent's company, Col. Nathaniel Sparhawk's regiment which marched April 20, 1775, in response to the alarm of April 19, 1775, to Cambridge and later served in Lieut. William Muzzey's company, Col. Sparhawk's regiment. [1] [2] [3]
In about 1780 he settled in Hancock, New Hampshire, where he established a saw mill and grist mill.[4] He was also a surveyor and served as town treasurer in 1782. [5]
He married Sarah Ball and the couple had several children. She died in 1790, and in 1793 he married widow Lurana Henry as his second wife.[6]
He passed away in 1808 in Cavendish, Vermont.
