About Samuel Bell, Sr.

Biography

Son of William Bell I

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bell-1658

Samuel was born about 1724. He passed away about 1803.

It is believed that Samuel Bell was born in Ireland and came to America with his father. He lived on a farm at the mouth of Christian Creek, Augusta, VA until 17 Feb 1761, when he conveyed this 300 acre tact to James Kerr, and purchased from Samuel Givens and wife a tract of 159 acres on Middle river at Mt. Meridian where he lived until his death, when he devised his land to his children[1]

The will of Samuel Bell is found in Will Book # IX, page 279. dated 8 May 1800. Samuel Bell's will to his wife, Jane; sons, William, Samuel, David, George; to son, John; sons James and Thomas; to daughter, Elizabeth Glaves; daughters Margaret and Martha Bell. Executors, wife Jane and sons David and James. Teste: d. Stephenson, Wm. Beard, Thomas Givens. Proved 27 June 1803. Executors qualify.

"Samuel gave Margaret permission to marry William McCutchan on 2nd June 1800 as reported in Chronicles of Scotch-Irish Settlement in Augusta Co., VA.

He must of died soon after that.

"Son, John Bell was married to Sarah "Sallie" McCutchan, sister of William McCutchan, on 25 August 1800 in Augusta Co., VA"

Owned a farm and mill on Givens Mill Run in Northern Augusta County. Information obtained from the then current residents of the property indicated there had been a family cemetery that had been destroyed through agricultural activity. They related having seen gravestones in a ditch near the location as children.

His wife "Jane" who is mentioned in his will may have been a second wife, sometimes reported as Holmes. His first wife was named Margaret and she appeared in his records as late as 1772. It is assumed they are also buried in this family cemetery.
