Son of California's first millionaire, the famous Samuel Brannan who presided over the Mormon emigrants on the Ship Brooklyn. As a child he was a passenger during the voyage from New York City to San Francisco. At 9 years of age he and his three sisters Adelaide, Fanny and Alisa were taken to Europe by their mother Ann Eliza Corwin Brannan. Sam Jr. was educated at Geneva, Switzerland as a mineralogist. He spent 40 years in Mexican mining operations and lost a fortune in the silver decline of 1898. He never married. He, as had his father,died in poverty and the two are buried next to each other.
