Biography

Birth

Samuel Burbank was born at Rowley, Massachusetts, on 15 Jul 1684, the son of Caleb Burbank and Martha (Smith) Burbank.[1]

Marriage

A previous version of this profile said that Samuel Burbank married Lydia Bartlett at Amesbury, Massachusetts in 1708. There is no record of the marriage in the published Amesbury vital records. The Haverhill vital records show their marriage but with just the date "bef. 1729,"[2] which is an indication that the marriage probably does not appear in the original records.

Children

The children of Samuel and Lydia were: Ebenezer Burbank, born at Haverhill Massachusetts, on 29 Dec 1709[3] Mehetable Burbank (1711-1806), born at Haverhill Massachusetts, on 28 Aug 1711[3] Mary Burbank (1713-1777), born at Haverhill Massachusetts, on 29 Dec 1713[3] Samuell Burbank (1715-1785), born at Haverhill Massachusetts, on 4 Nov 1715[3] Caleb Burbank, baptized at Haverhill, Massachusetts, on 12 Nov 1727[3] Deborah Burbank, baptized at Haverhill, Massachusetts, on 12 Nov 1727[3] John Burbank, baptized at Haverhill, Massachusetts, on 12 Nov 1727[3] Sarah Burbank (1715-1748), baptized at Haverhill, Massachusetts, on 12 Nov 1727[3] Timothy Burbank, baptized at Haverhill, Massachusetts, on 26 May 1728[3] Jonathan Burbank, born on 17 Jan 1732 at Rumford (now Concord), New Hampshire[4]

Move to New Hampshire

At some time between the baptism of their son Timothy at Haverhill in May 1728 and the birth of their son Jonathan in January 1732, Samuel and Lydia Burbank moved from Haverhill to Rumford, New Hampshire (now the town of Concord).

Capture by the Indians and Death

On 22 Apr 1746, Samuel Burbank along with his sons Caleb and Jonathan and five members of the David Woodwell family were captured in the Woodwell garrison at Number Five, New Hampshire (now the town of Hopkinton) by Indians belonging to the St. Francis tribe and allied with the French. Lydia Burbank managed to conceal herself and avoid capture. The captives were taken to Quebec and imprisoned. Samuel Burbank died there in prison. Caleb and Jonathan eventually returned to New England.[5][6] Sources
