Samuel was the first Hayward to locate in Menden, where Ferdinando Thayer (brother-in-law) had already moved

Samuel owned house lots in Mendon (some in payment for civic services) prior to King Philip's War. He left Mendon during the war and is recorded as having returned immediately following King Philip's death.

<p>SAMUEL,</p><p><p>Braintree, Swanzey, Mendon, Mass. He was a housewright.</p></p><p><p>1671, 1, 20. He bought twenty acres at Mendon for 10.</p></p><p><p>1680, 1, 17. He made an agreement with the Selectmen of Mendon,</p></p><p><p>"to begin and manage the frame of a Meeting House 26 feet in</p></p><p><p>length and 24 foot in breadth, a girt house, 14 feet between</p></p><p><p>joysts." He was to have 3s. per day, and to have a cow and calf</p></p><p><p>as part of his pay. The first meetinghouse had been destroyed</p></p><p><p>by Indians in 1676. 1685, 5, 25. He and three others were a</p></p><p><p>committee "to parchase the Indian title" of a tract of land.</p></p><p><p>1689. He paid this year toward the salary of Rev. Grindal</p></p><p><p>Rawson 1, 8s. 3d. Mr. Rawson had part of his salary in. cash,</p></p><p><p>the</p></p><p><p>rest in provisions, etc.</p></p><p><p>1693, 3, 1. He was one of the three first tithing men chosen at</p></p><p><p>Mendon. These tithing men were to present all idle and</p></p><p><p>disorderly persons, profane swearers and cursers, and Sabbath</p></p><p><p>breakers, etc. Their badge was a black staff two feet long,</p></p><p><p>tipped with brass.</p></p><p><p>1713, 9, 2. Administration to son William. Inventory, 74.</p></p><p><p>1713, 12, 23. Agreement of heirs concerning estate of their</p></p><p><p>father, signed by sons Benjamin and Jonathan and daughters</p></p><p><p>Bethiah Hayward and Huldah Butterworth, and sons-in-law Jacob</p></p><p><p>Aldrich who married Margery, Benjamin Thayer who married Sarah,</p></p><p><p>oPeter Aldrich who marriedHannah, Seth Aldrich who married</p></p><p><p>Deborah, Nicholas Cook who married Mehitable and Joseph</p></p><p><p>Bockwood who married Mary; "all daughters of said deceased."</p></p><p><p>All the above gave receipts to their brother William for 7,</p></p><p><p>paid to each by him; and they agreed to relinquish to him all</p></p><p>their interest in their father's estate. 17</p>
