Samuel Hyde of Connecticut

Samuel Hyde, born at Hartford, Conn., about 1637, only son of the first William Hyde of Norwich, m. in June, 1659, Jane Lee of East Saybrook (now Lyme). She was the dau. of Thomas Lee and ___ Brown, his wife.

[This Thomas Lee came from England in 1641, with is wife and three children. He d. on the passage; and his widow and children came to Saybrook. The first Thomas Lee of Lyme was brother of Jane, wife of this Samuel Hyde. And Sarah Lee, who m. John Large of Lyme, and settled on Long Island, was their sister.]

Samuel Hyde and his wife came to Norwich in 1660. Their eldest dau., Elizabeth, born in August of that year, was the first white child born in Norwich. He was a farmer, and had lands assigned to him at Norwich West Farms, where he d. in 1677, at the age of 40 years. And John Birchard became the guardian of his children, who were all minors at that time. The date of his wife's death is not ascertained. Their children were:

2. John, b. in Dec., 1667, at Norwich, m. Experience Abel.
3. William, b. in Jan., 1670, at Norwich, m. Anne Bushnell.

5. Jabez, b. in May 1677, at Norwich, m. Elizabeth Bushnell.
6. Elizabeth, b. in Aug., 1660, at Norwich, m. Lieut. Richard Lord.
7. Phebe, b. in Jan., 1663, at Norwich, m. Matthew Griswold.
8. Sarah, b. in Feb., 1675, d. the same year.

• THOMAS LEE, Lyme, came about 1641, with his mother and two sisters, Phebe, and Jane, the father, whose name was Thomas, having died, as tradition was, on the voyage of smallpox. The surv. came from Boston to Saybrook, though the father of the mother by the same authority, is called Brown of Providence. This son must have been very young, for Lyme rec. gives him children up to 1692, and his first, John, by wife Sarah Kirkland, was born 1670; Thomas 1672, Sarah 1675; and after this wife died, 1676, he married for second wife Mary, perhaps daughter of Bathazar De Wolf, and had Phebe, born 1677; Mary 1679, Eliz., William 1684, Stephen, Hannah, and four more children, one of whom died young. The descendants of the five sons of Samuel Hyde in 1779 showed updards of twenty families of Hydes, comprising 150 persons in the town plot and western part of Norwich. 

"Samuel and Jann (Lee) Hyde are also the ancestors of Grover Cleveland, President of the United States. Their eldest son, John Hyde, who married experience abel, had a son James, known as Capt. James Hyde, who married Sarah Marshall. They in turn had a daughter, Abiah Hyde, who married Rev. Aaron Cleveland. Their son, William Cleavelamd and his wife Margaret Falley, were the grand-parents of Grover Cleveland."
