Early Mapes researchers placed Samuel as the son of Jonathan, Thomas' youngest son. This was maintained by Frank Mapes Ham in his 1965 book "The Mapes Family in America." However, in 1941 Lester Dunbar Mapes wrote a paper entitled "A Tentative Correction of the Mapes Family LIne" in which he placed Samuel as the son of William Mapes III.

Comment: The only proof I find for Lt. William Mapes and Eunice is the paper written by Frank Mapes Ham which has no valid sources. I do find valid sources for Jonathan and Mary.
