About Samuel Nicholson

Elisabeth CHARLES was born on 8 Jan 1671, Perquimans County, North Carolina[25], and died between 19 Mar 1747 and Jan 1748 Perquimans[26]. She was the second by this name, the first was transported with William and must have died young.

Elisabeth married on 16 Dec 1688 "at ye quarterly meeting" at Jonathan Phelps house in Perquimans[27] Samuel NICHOLSON. Samuel was the son of Christopher NICHOLSON and Hannah REDNAP. He was born on 12 Mar 1665 in Perquimans. He died 29 day of Mar 1728 in Perquimans[28].

Samuel was born 12 Mar 1665 to Christopher Nicholson and Hannah Rednap[1][2].

He married Elizabeth Charles on 16 Dec 1688[3]. They had at least five daughters together.

In 1691 he gifted his brother Joseph 200 acres of land[4]: Samuel Nicholson, for love I bear my brother, Joseph, do give 200a on North east side of Perq River, adj land formerly Joseph Scotts, called “Log house Land” when it shall come into my hands by the death of Ann Dorman, the Relict of Christopher Nicholson Dec'd. Oct 5, 1691. Test’ Peter Gray, John Kinse, John Lawrence.

In May 1694 Samuel Nicholson received a headright grant for Christopher Nicholson, and Hannah his wife (who had come from New England), Deliverance Sutton (daughter of the said Christopher, and wife of Joseph Sutton), Francis Simons, Hannah Nicholson[5].

In August of that same year he sold his share of the land, 300 acres, to Joseph for £20[6]: Samuel Nicholson of Albemarle, for £20 pd by Joseph Nicholson of same—sold 300a West side of Suttons Creek, “to me grt by the Lords Pro’ May 22, 1694. Seal Aug 13, 1694. Test’ John Whedbee, John Stepney.

In 1697 and 1701 Samuel is listed as a Justice of the Court[7].

In 1708 he gives land to his daughter Abigail[8]: Samuel Nicholson of Perq River, “in Con’ of the Love I bear my Dau Abigal Albertson, do give to her my Plan’ at the River side, next to Ezekiel Modlins line, the other part being possessed by Ann Dorman. Said Dau to have one half of said Land—200a, & if she die without issue, to dau Hannah Nicholson.” 12d, 2mo 1708. Samuel & Elizabeth Nicholson.

Samuel wrote his Will[9] on 22 March 1728. Samuel died a week later on 29 March 1728[10].

There appears to be some type of probate notation on the Will dated 1728 but the Abstract states there is no probate date[11]. Samuel Nicholson. 22 Mar 1727-1728. No date of probate. Daughters: Sarah and Elizabeth Nicholson. Friend: Sarah Gloster. Wife and Executrix: Elizabeth. Executor: John Anderson (son-in-law). Witnesses: Zachariah Nixon, John Keaton, Elisabeth Montecue. 10. Samuel NICHOLSON (Edmund, Christopher), born 12 Mar 1665 in Perquimans County, North Carolina; died 29 Mar 1727 in Perquimans. He married Elisabeth CHARLES[33]. The Quaker Meeting record reads "Samuel Nicholson & Elizabeth Charles ware Maried at ye quarterle Meeting ye 16th of Dec 1688."[34] One of his deeds reads: "Samuel Nicholson for love I bear my brother, Joseph, do give 200a on North east side of Perquimans River, adj land formerly Joseph Scotts, called "Log House Land" when it shall come into my hands by the death of Ann Dorman, Relict of Christopher Nicholson Dec'd. Samuel Nicholson was a justice from Jan. 1696/7 to Apr. 1701 of Perquimans County court. He was also a Burgess in 1708. On 4 Dec 1717 Samuel and other friends up the creek requested to have a week day meeting at his house. Perquimans Meeting ordered it to be on the 4th day of the week (Wed.)[37].

The will of Samuel Nicholson mentions, wife Elizabeth; Elizabeth Anderson, my daughter, daughter Sarah, son-in-law John Anderson. His will was dated 22 1st mo (Mar) 1728[38].

Elisabeth declared her intention to marry 2rd Zachariah Nixon 4 Apr 1729[39]. He was the son of Zachariah Nixon and Elizabeth Page.

The will of Elizabeth (Charles) Nicholson Nixon dated 19 Mar 1747/8 proved Jan Court 1748/9. names son-in-law, John Anderson, daughter Elizabeth, daughter Sarah Jones, Grandchildren: Sam'l, John, Joseph, and Sarah Anderson, daughter Sarah Jones, Elizabeth, daughter of Joshua Albertson, cousin Joseph, son of Thomas Nicholson. Executor's: John Anderson and grandson Joseph Anderson. Test: Thomas Overman, Joshua Albertson, Thomas Nicholson.

Samuel and Elisabeth Nicholson had the following children:

  • 11 F i. Abigail NICHOLSON was born on 24 Sep 1689 in Perquimans County, North Carolina and died before 1727. She married 12 Jul 1705 Nathaniel Albertson at Samuel Nicholson’s house[40].
  • 12 F ii. Hannah NICHOLSON was born on 9 Apr 1692 in Perquimans County, North Carolina. She declared her intention to marry Stephen Scott on 5 Feb 1720/21[41]. They had Elizabeth born 9 Nov 1721, died 20 Mar 1798, married ? Jipson, and Joseph, born 29 Feb 1724, Perquimans[42].
  • 13 F iii. Ida NICHOLSON was born on 10 Nov 1694 in Perquimans County, North Carolina. Ida probably died young.
  • + 14 F iv. Elisabeth NICHOLSON was born on 5 Jan 1697 in Perquimans County, North Carolina and died between 25 May 1757 and Jan 1760 Perquimans. She married John Anderson. (SEE ANDERSON FAMILY)
  • 15 F v. Sarah NICHOLSON was born on 20 Apr 1706 in Perquimans County, North Carolina. Sarah married John Jones 7 8th mo (Oct) 1741 Perquimans. John was probably the son of Peter Jones (died 1752).
