About Samuel Perrin

Samuel Perrin was the son of William Perrin and Mary CLOPTON Perrin, the ninth child in their family of twelve. Born in Charlotte County, Virginia, Samuel was about 3 years old when the family moved to South Carolina.

In his will, written in 1783, William Perrin wrote: "I give and bequeath to my son Samuel all the land I possess on the east of Hardlabour Creek below the mile Branch also one negro boy named Harry also one feather bed when he comes to the age of twenty one years or marries to him his heirs and assigns for ever." Samuel later bought additional land where he built his home, had his cotton plantation, and located the family cemetery.

Samuel Perrin and Eunice Chiles were married 17 March 1795, and had eight known children, seven of whom are linked to below on this memorial page.

The eighth was the oldest child, Henry William Perrin, born 20 December 1800, died 13 May 1834. He was unmarried, and probably is buried in this cemetery.

Samuel served in the War of 1812. He enlisted in December of 1813 and served as Captain of a company in Col. William Youngblood's 1st Regiment of South Carolina Militia, until his discharge in March, 1814.

Samuel Perrin was the first magistrate in the Hard Labor settlement, and was a member of the Legislature from Abbeville County.

Samuel, like his father and brothers, died before the age of sixty. Five of his eight children-- Lewis, Mary Ann, Agnes, Samuel, and James-- were still minors when he died. With this in mind, he made no bequests of the land, but left the disposition of his estate to his executors, his oldest sons Henry William Perrin and Thomas Chiles Perrin. They were directed to sell from his real and personal estate "whatever shall seem fit except that part of my real estate that lies south of the Adamson survey as a home for my wife Eunice and my minor children", the latter to receive "whatever the Executors can spare until the youngest of my children shall come of age or during the widowhood of my wife Eunice who shall live at my present place of residence. If she marries or moves away she is to receive two Negro women and two Negro men..." Meantime the unsold property, real and personal, "is to be kept together on the Plantation."

Samuel's plantation passed to his son, Samuel II. Today the site of his home and the family cemetery, surrounded by Sumter National Forest, are in a family trust established by a great-great grandson.
