Biography

Samuel Ramsden, son of Daniel Ramsden, and great grandson of Mayflower passenger Francis Eaton, was born 5 June 1690 in Plymouth, Massachusetts. The record indicates the mother of Daniel's last four children was Sarah.[1][2][3] The Mayflower Society states: "This is surely an error for Hannah."[1]

He married twice. His first marriage to Martha Bowker (1684-1750); daughter of James and Mary (____) Bowker took place in Scituate, Massachusetts, 24 Dec 1712.[4][1]

His second marriage was 20 Aug 1750, at Pembroke, Massachusetts, to Annah (Hanks) Norris (1706-before 1797); daughter of Benjamin and Abigail (______) Hanks; widow of John Norris.[1]

Samuel died in Pembroke, Massachusetts, Nov 1759. Samuel's will was dated 21 Aug 1759 at Pembroke and proved 3 Dec 1759. He named wife Anna; son Samuel Ramsden; granddaughter Mercy Hersey; grandson Samuel Ramsden; granddaughter Betty Crooker; daughters Mary Crooker and Susanna Hersey. [1]

Wife, Anna Ramsdell of Pembroke, weaver, also left a will dated 10 June 1785; proved 2 Oct 1797. She named a cousin Sarah Hanks and daughter Content Whitman.[1]

Mary Ramsdel, d/o Samll and Mary of Pembroke, baptized 2 September 1716 in Scituate.[6] Content Ramsdel was baptized in Scituate, 3 April 1720 and died before his father's 1759 will.[6] Susanna Ramsdell was born in Scituate, about 1721. Will[7]

In the name of God Amen. I Samuel Ramsden of Pembroke in the County of Plymouth Yeoman being of perfect mind & rememberance praise be God to Make and Ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner & form following: first of all I give my Soul into the Hands of God my Maker knowing that thro the Meritorious Death of Jesus Christ my only Savior & redeemer to receive free pardon for all my sins & my body to be buried in Christian burial at the Discretion of my Executors. I give & bequeath unto Anna my Wife two Heifers & all my Sheep & a cow bell & all my rye & corn & also my wool [illegible] pair of Iron Dogs & all my household goods she had before I was married to her. I give & bequeath unto my son Samuel Ramsdel my Great Coat. I give & bequeath unto my granddaughter Mercy Hearsey my Feather Bed & the Furniture that now belongs to it. I give and bequeath unto my grandson Samuel Ramsden my Powder horn Cartridge box and cutlass. I give and bequeath unto my granddaughter Betty Crooker my Great iron Pott & my Trammel & all my Pewter ware & all other my Goods & Effects of all Denomination after my just Debts and funeral charges are [satisfied] I give & bequeath to my two daughters Mary Crooker & Susanna Hersey to be Equally divided between them [illegible] all y goods & moveable effects to them all that is not mentioned in this my last will & testament. I do make Daniel Crooker Executor of this my last will & testament & I hereby utterly disallow revoke and disnul any & every other testament will & bequeaths made by me in any ways beforehand satisfying & confirming this and no other to be my last will & testament. In testimony whereof I hereby sett my hand this 21st day of August 1759.
