Biography
Samuel Riley Dawson was born in Ireland and his parents moved to America the same year. Samuel enlisted for the war of 1812, at St. Louis, Missouri Territory, on April 1, 1813, as a private in Captain James Calloways Company, Col. Nathan Boone's Missouri Mounted Volunteers. He was honorably discharged April 1, 1814 at Woods Fort. Samuel later received a land grant in Texas, near Granger, for his military service, which was the reason of the migration of some of the family to Texas. He also had a ranch near San Saba Peak in Lampass County, Texas. As shown in the census records in 1840 Samuel and his family moved to Carroll County, Arkansas. By 1850 they are shown in Williamson County, Texas.
Some believe Samuel Riley Dawson, Sr. was born as early as 1773 and as late as 1784. Some believe he was born in either South Carolina or Ireland. Some believe he immigrated in 1782 with his parents who are unknown, at this time.
Samuel Riley Dawson, Sr. married Polly Ann Rogers in 1804 in Calhoun, McMinn, Tennessee. They had seven children, two daughters followed by five sons.
