Biography

SAMUEL SPALDING, b. at Chelmsford, 6 Mar 1668 son of John John Spalding and Hannah (Hale) Spalding Hannah Heald;[1] Samuel died at Pomfret about 1725 (estate distribution April 1726);[2] m. at Chelmsford, 30 Jun 1698,[3] MARY BUTTERFIELD, b. at Chelmsford, 4 Feb 1672/73[4] daughter of Samuel and Mary (Ballard) Butterfield.[5]

Mary and Samuel started their family in Chelmsford where their first three children were born. They were then in Windham County, Connecticut.[6] The family resided in the neighborhood of Brooklyn which included parts of Canterbury and Pomfret. Samuel Spalding was named lieutenant of the train band for that area in 1723.[7]

Samuel’s estate was valued at £823.17.4, and distribution was made from the estate on 12 August 1726. Widow Mary received one-third of the real estate during her life and one-third of the movables. Eldest son Samuel received a distribution of £156.17.9 and each of the other five children, Jonas, Zachariah, Jonathan, Mary, and Bridget received £78.8.10.[8]

i SAMUEL SPALDING, b. at Chelmsford, 4 Jun 1699;[9] m. likely EUNICE CADY, b. at Groton, 20 Oct 1704 daughter of Daniel and Mary (Green) Cady.

ii JONAS SPALDING, b. at Chelmsford, 15 Aug 1700;[10] d. at New Marlborough, MA, before 1790; m. 1st at Canterbury, 5 Jul 1722, RACHEL CLEVELAND,[11] baptized at Preston, CT, 12 Sep 1703 daughter of Josiah and Mary (Bates) Cleveland; Rachel d. by about 1737. Jonas m. 2nd at Brooklyn, CT, 16 Nov 1738, BRIDGET BROWN, b. at Canterbury, 16 Aug 1719 daughter of Thomas and Rachel (Leavens) Brown; d. unknown but before 1768. Jonas m. 3rd at New Marlborough, MA, 25 Feb 1768, MALLATIAH ROBBINS (widow of Simeon Cooke whom she married in 1738), b. about 1720; Mallatiah d. at New Marlborough, after 1790 when she was head of household.

iii ZACHARIAH SPAULDING, b. at Chelmsford, 3 Nov 1703;[12] d. at Pomfret, 31 Jul 1771; m. 1st at Chelmsford, 9 Jun 1723, ELIZABETH BLODGETT, b. at Chelmsford, 10 Mar 1705 daughter of William and Elizabeth (Warren) Blodgett; Elizabeth d. at Pomfret, 12 Apr 1752. Zachariah m. 2nd at Brooklyn, CT, 30 Aug 1753, SARAH PIKE, b. at Canterbury, 14 Feb 1724/5 daughter of John and Sarah (Hyde) Pike. Sarah Pike married second Samuel Danielson.

iv JONATHAN SPALDING, b. at Canterbury, 16 Aug 1707;[13] d. at Sheffield, MA, about 1762 (probate); m. by 1734, PERSIS who was not identified.

v MARY SPALDING, b. at Canterbury, 2 Mar 1710;[14] m. at Pomfret, 28 Dec 1727, JOHN WOODWARD, b. at Newton, MA, 21 Mar 1702 son of John and Hannah (Hyde) Woodward; John d. at Dutchess County, NY, 1773 (probate Aug 1773).

vi BRIDGET SPALDING, b. at Canterbury, 13 Feb 1712;[15] d. at Brooklyn, CT, 22 Apr 1806; m. JOHN HUBBARD, b. at Pomfret, 15 Nov 1712 son of John and Mary (-) Hubbard; John d. at Brooklyn, CT, 23 May 1786.
